While I wasn't there, you were always there for me was something that I always said whenever I see Ash Ketchum. However, as all good things must come to an end, this is it, this is Ash's last series. When I first heard about this news I felt the childhood inside of me leaving, the Ash Ketchum is leaving. Although at first, I was disappointed I had made up to myself that this was bound to happen at some point. So before going into this I had high hopes, I mean who wouldn't this is Ash's last season in the anime after all. Well, spoiler
...
alert I was disappointed.
As Ash's last season, they could have done so much more with him as there is plenty of material to use from his past adventures. I really wanted to like this season, but I just couldn't stop thinking about the possibilities. Although the Latias arc was decent in showing how Ash still hasn't obtained the goal of pokemon master, I just couldn't help myself to think what if they made this season to show Ash obtaining the goal of pokemon master. After all, this is the last time potentially we will see Ash and it would've been great to see him achieving his goal after twenty-six years but nope, they just had to end it on an ambiguous note of Ash will become one someday. Like, imagine how cool it would've been if, in the new series, there is the one and only pokemon master in the world that is Ash Ketchum.
Team rocket was also an issue this season as well. I just felt like they had too much melodrama going on and I wished that they had a good conclusion. They had far too many useless moments in the season and it really felt like a drag. It would've been great if, after all this time, they decide that maybe evil isn't suited for them after all or something along the lines of that to draw a conclusion.
However, not all is bad with this season as we did get some nice nostalgic moments with the original series crew, brock and misty, and seeing some of Ash's old pokemon! I just wished they had shown more of Ash's past companions and pokemon. The last episode was definitely the best of the entire season as it just had so much emotional weight to it. With every single move that Ash did, the team rocket encounter, and just the overall tone of the episode really felt like a normal episode but knowing this is the last time we will see Ash made it feel emotional. This is especially true when Type Wild started playing at the end as Ash continued his journey alongside Pikachu as that moment really made me cry like a baby.
Overall although the season was a letdown, I still liked it. It was just a plot we have seen many times before dragged out for eleven episodes. Putting aside my personal ideals, this is essentially what the pokemon anime was all about, a journey with Ash. However, Ash in my eyes has already become the pokemon master despite what he says. As for the question of what exactly a pokemon master is, in my opinion, it was the journey all along. The reason why Ash has not told himself that he is not a pokemon master yet is because doing that would mean the end of his journey. Befriending every pokemon is what Ash told himself what a pokemon master probably is, but I think that is just a physical barrier to not let himself stop his journey. As this is the end of Ash's journey in the anime, you shouldn't let this be the end of your childhood as you should let it live inside you just like how Ash will forever continue his journey with Pikachu.
