The biggest appeal of this manga is imagining what it would be like if it was good instead. All the good parts are also the parts that have nothing to do with Danganronpa. Like, I just can't express how unnecessary the pivot to Danganronpa was on the first volume of on-the-surface-a-very-interesting-story.
I really like Takumi though, I just wish he was in something that was not shit. The art is great and he's going into my bishounen pile of fame. Every other character on the other hand is utterly unremarkable and forgettable, except the antagonist who only exists as a foil to Takumi anyway. At least

When you watch the subbed version you never stop wanting to beat the dub team to death. The claims that the original is some kind of unsalvagable dogshit is grossly exaggerated; it's a very cute, earnest and sweet anime at its best and just alright at its weakest episodes.
Is it a revolutionary misunderstood gem that would save weebkind as we know it if it was just given a chance? No, probably not. But being written off entirely as The Room of Anime and having an abridged series touted as the ideal way of experiencing it strikes me as profoundly silly. The dub which everyone knows this ...

Really charming and heartfelt manga by an author that really really likes fish. Funa's love for all things aquatic and unique art style absolutely shine in this, and in my opinion this is the best way of experiencing the story overall; better paced than the game, with characters that feel much more alive and expressive than what RPG talk sprites can deliver.
That said, it's hard to recommend Ounabara to Wadanohara to anyone who didn't grow up with the game. It doesn't really do anything particularly crazy or new, much like the game that preceded it; more than anything it feels like an excuse to ... |
