Way to much spoon feeding. like crazy amounts of spoon feeding.
I don't know why Anime have this fetish of spoon-feeding the viewer what we are suppose to feel when watching certain scenes or characters, but I'm start to hate that approach. I'm not even talking about the silly and mostly unnecessary inner monologues. I am talking about the characters we are suppose to hate, love, root for.
Take the Prince Julius, BTW SPOILERS:
This is the "You have to hate" character. Or the asshole character. To make him look terrible he gets an evil laughter, an evil smile and evil face, he is also responsible for
...
selling the perfect saint (which makes no sense even if the anime tries to sell that it does), he wants to marry the little sister and lies about his mistakes, blaming everyone else. The cherry on top is after being invited by the current saint to go to the front line (because reasons) and he goes into super scary mode, hiding behind the saint, pushing soldiers in front of him and crying like a little bitch. I get it anime, we are suppose to hate him, put the spoon down.
The same kinda goes for the parents of the saint. Its crazy how desperately the anime tries to shove the viewer these on-the-nose scenes.
Now lets go to the other side: The good prince: There is not much to say. He is the lalida prince. Cares for everyone and everything, looks good, smiles, is charming (well for anime measures) and is overall the good kind of character. He is not really doing much and I went into this because there would be romance , whatever.
However, its not only the prince. It seems that the whole freaking city the saint was sent to is a mesh of good people. Just plain goodness. I mean what kind of fking black and white bullsh't is this?
Now to the MC herself: It makes absolutely no freaking sense to send the saint that literally protects the whole city from monsters to another city. NO way. I am not buying that. I didn't care at first because I though this anime was mostly trope-hunting for the "The character we feel sorry for gets a better ending and a decent romance". I would have been somewhat fine with that but the anime keeps going the boring path.
The anime is also not really hiding the fact that this is absolutely retarded. Like 10 min later, the city gets flooded with monster warnings and everything seems to fall apart and the prince is like: WHAT??? WHY NOW?? WHAT IS HAPPENING, OMG!
The last character I would like to talk about is Mia, the little sister of the perfect saint… and I can tell you, she is something else. She is the main reason I started to see this anime more as a comedy other than whatever this anime tries to be.
Imagine you are a little sister or brother to someone that you deeply love and look after. Also you are a saint. The protector of the city and you (hopefully) have been taught manners and some f*cking common sense. Now for some reason you have NOT noticed that the character you deeply look up to has been treated like trash. Suddenly, this person vanishes and everyone, even the person who is suppose to marry her and doesn't even care one bit that she is gone, tells you that she just left off, voluntarily. Yes the main saint protecting the whole city by herself just goes off. Exactly. Logic.
After a while, like 20 seconds, you heard that this person was sold to another city and that the prince is the person behind all of this. Now, what is your logical conclusion? Exactly, you marry the prince so that you can betray him later. YES. If you thought that she would help her sister, find her or run to the city she was sold to, then I have to disappoint you because the REVENGE ROUTE IS ON BABY. And if you, like every normal human being, think this is still stupid; don't worry bro, the anime got you because this revenge route is just a trick: Character development baby and its coming for you REAL good.
The saint remembers that she is the protector of the city (like 1 episode later) so she instantly changes her motivation from Revenge to "I haf to sive sa piple, beecuse I good."
So she rans to the older brother of the prince, who locked himself in his room for like 12 years or something, and she tried to motivate him back on his feet by screaming at him some cliche motivation speeches. Well that magically worked and he got up saving the day aaaaaaand that's where I dropped.
If this spoon feeding trash keeps going, I assume that in about 5 - 10 years the animes will have flags above the character which states who we have to hate and not. Like: "Evil character" or "Good character". Like those "laugh" signs in talk shows.
