Banana Fish

I’m surprised these aren’t the top of their respective recommendations list. Banana Fish and Rainbow have a ton of similarities. Both are gritty psychological thrillers that share a main theme of finding strength and hope through strong bonds (Ash and Eiji, The Seven Cellmates) in unfair and bleak settings. The main casts are primarily diverse male delinquents with rough backgrounds. Though they take place in different countries and times periods, they shed light on world issues during their eras (gangs, crime, prison, rape, gun violence, etc). Very high chance you’ll, at the least, appreciate the other anime if you enjoyed the one you’ve already watched. And yes, tears are also very guaranteed.

Tomodachi Game

They’re actually very similar when you look into it. Blue Lock and Tomodachi Game are both competition-based anime set in a controversial project setting ran by an eccentric leader. They develop the characters and story through the same themes – teamwork, ethics, and above all else, friendship and betrayal. Isagi and Yuuichi are both similar protagonists in the way they both develop into selfish and “evil” characters to rise to the top. The rest of the cast does too, but it’s most prominent in them. Their monologues are also similar. And when you think about, you can consider Blue Lock as a death game, only except your soccer career is at stake instead of your life, which the anime shows can be just as threatening.

NHK ni Youkoso!
|
Welcome to the NHK and Evangelion are both top-tier psychological dramas that have a somewhat episodic structure, with a cast of mentally unhealthy and heavily flawed characters, especially the protagonists. Gritty, relatable, realistic and heavy watches depending on who you are – if you watched either and liked one of them, the next will no doubt give you that same feeling and even a long-lasting impression.

Devilman: Crybaby

Dandadan

Both anime are produced from the same studio, both have characters that get merged with supernatural beings, and both have the same chaotic vibe. Only real difference is Devilman: Crybaby is darker and Dandadan is more comedic.
