My first review on MAL, and probably because it’s the first time I’ve rated an anime this low, despite it supposedly belonging to a genre I usually enjoy.
I’m frustrated and genuinely bewildered by this show, and I’m going to explain why, without giving away spoilers for those who still want to give it a try.
To start, the premise of the story is completely absurd. While that’s not uncommon in school romance anime, the issue here is that the plot never manages to evolve past its ridiculous setup. In most cases, a shaky premise is forgivable if the story develops in a compelling way, but that’s
...
not what happens here. Instead, the absurdity just escalates episode after episode.
Then there are the main characters. Runa is completely disconnected from reality. She’s naive, maybe even dumb, though well-meaning, that’s probably her only redeeming quality. On the other hand, Ryuuto is what could only be described as a hopeless loser. He’s portrayed in such a pitiful light that it’s uncomfortable to watch. Like Runa, his only redeeming quality is that he’s kind. Their entire "relationship" (and I’m being generous calling it that) is barely held together by the fact that they’re both nice people. That’s it.
The only character that showed any real potential was Maria. Early on, she displays more human traits, jealousy and obsession, which gave me hope that she might add something disruptive and interesting to the dynamic. That hope faded quickly, though, because even her arc ended up being wasted.
The rest of the supporting cast is shallow and poorly written. Nicole and Sekiya’s story was cringeworthy, and even more ridiculous was the subplot with "fat-chan" who magically becomes thin overnight just to appeal to the "small-gyaru" who had already rejected him.
Lastly, and perhaps most offensively, the pacing and timing of the series is some of the worst I’ve ever seen in a slice-of-life/romance/drama. After dragging us through emotionally flat episodes, the show throws in a fanservice scene post-credits at the end, right when the story is supposed to reach its emotional climax. Instead, they introduce a sick-girl plotline that lasts half an episode, right when the male lead is supposedly "losing his virginity", a key theme the show weirdly builds toward. On top of that, there’s a final subplot involving Runa and Maria’s divorced parents getting back together, which comes out of nowhere. Apparently, their father was getting remarried without either daughter even knowing he was in a relationship.
This show was genuinely hard to finish. I’m giving it the score I gave not out of hate, but out of disappointment. Because I honestly believe it had potential, at least enough to be an average show. Unfortunately, it ended up being a complete mess.
