While comparing these shows might be a bit of a stretch at first, I think they're similar in the way they present a deeply immersive fantasy world, with sometimes unforgiving realism and melancholy themes. These anime take their time to tell their stories, and both have flawed, realistic characters, which makes for a unique experience.

Both shows are about a group of friends working towards a goal guided one way or another by the loss of someone they held close. The characters in these shows often fight or cry but have to accept hard truths in the end which makes for a real tear jerker no matter who you are.
