People who watch the "Ghost Stories Dub Funny Moments" compilations on YouTube probably think this show is a laugh a minute.
It is not. There's a reason people are only able to quote the same five jokes. That's literally all there is to it.
Each 20 minute episode maybe has two funny jokes, TOPS.
I don't get offended easily, especially given that this was made in the early 2000s but dear lord, these jokes just don't fly at all, even by edgelord standards.
There's also the social context of Americans severely bastardizing the works of Japanese creators but that's a topic for another day. As someone who lives in

It is very fucking weird that a lot of kids born in the early 2000s watched this sometime between 2013-2016, not realizing that Danganronpa is originally a visual novel and not an anime.
Do yourself a favor and play the fucking VN. Don't waste your time with this shit. I can't play most games and VNs due to owning a Mac but I must say that the first two DR games are one of the few that I can. I don't even like the first DR game that much but even I admit it's leagues better than this adaptation. 12 episodes is not enough to justify the ... Apr 24, 2025

This is when I realized that sometimes people who think certain manga is good fail to specify that only certain adaptations qualify.
You know how some Hollywood movies nowadays (Sonic (2020), The Mario Movie (2023) end the movie at a point where it feels like that should be the start? Almost as if these movies know they'll be popular enough to have a sequel where the actual fun content can begin? That's how Chainsaw Man Season 1 feels. By the time you feel acquainted enough with the characters, it's all over. "Ah, yes! This group of characters have finally reached the point where we can get ... Apr 24, 2025

Kazutaka Kodaka is known for spamming his themes over and over again to the point where "hope" and "despair" become white noise. Then he creates the character Kyosuke Munakata to deconstruct these platitudes, ironically turning "platitudes" into a platitude itself.
Akudama Drive is all style and little sauce. It looks aesthetically appealing and the character work isn't the worst thing in the world– especially the protagonist. However, once again, I am left with a Kodaka work where I feel that his message is far simpler than what he aims to accomplish. If the only "visual novel" you've read is Danganronpa (implying that you count Danganronpa as a ... Apr 24, 2025
Akame ga Kill!

add
Akame ga Kill is a show that's only good if you watched it when you're 14 years old. I can somewhat understand. Around 2016, a lot of "vulgar" media such as iDubbbz, Deadpool, and Sausage Party started gaining mainstream appeal with middle and high schoolers. Watching Akame ga Kill is the equivalent of watching that weird self-insert harem fanfic that weird kid made in 7th grade where all your classmates were into you and all the bullies got tortured and mutilated in the worst way possible. Plus, with lots of unnecessary swearing, mutilation, and rape.
And honestly, that wouldn't even be so bad if the show ... |
