All I can say is, JC Staff did it, they ruined another sequel. First outrageous one for me was One Punch Man S2.
I really really like Tsukimichi S1, the relationship the MC had with the rest of the cast, the dialogue was spot on, the pacing was spot on, the action, oh the action. There are plenty of power fantasy shows out there, but not many could really do the "overpowered" trope well enough. S1 did achieve it, I watched it a few times too.
But when it came to S2, everything was just... mediocre, it was not like there was anything really vomit status (though
...
if I tried I could point out some things like some background characters were legit vomit material). The animation went from what I deemed "a season standout" for S1, which is pretty good for a show within the season but nothing too special, to "seasonal Isekai slop" levels of animation, how I would describe it is, it is like those no name Isekai shows that come out every season? The animation is animation, but it is so unremarkable, so choppy, but not powerpoint presentation levels. I could also tell, despite not reading any source material, they cut a lot of parts out, like perhaps the kind of fun non story related stuff that made S1 so fun to watch. The dialogue pacing was just off too, I remembered being able to laugh quite regularly, and really have that "I wish that was me moments" but with S2 I just couldn't be bothered man.
That being said, I still do enjoy the story, albeit trimmed to hell and back, and would see S2 as a speedbump, but if S3 doesn't improve to at least S1 standards, I am outright dropping the series. Such a shame too, I really liked S1.

Well this review might be a little skewed because of certains reasons and it may be different to what you will experience in a different state of mind. For context, I had a massive argument with my family today and was feeling pretty down in the shitter when I was looking for the current season shows' latest episodes and realised they have not been released yet. So I did a quick scroll and saw Otome Game in tbe title, and remembered that I liked the other one also centered around otome games and a certain bakarina, so I went what the hell lets give this
...
show a shot and ended up binging the whole show.
Onto the review proper. This show is flawed, if you can easily tell from tbe other reviews' numbers this show will not be a seasontional game changer or hit because it is really heavily flawed. The world building is not lacking, it's non-existent. It practically skipped everything you need to know before the major plotlines, like a major plotpoint is concluded in about episode 3? Stuff like the MC's buddies are not even introduced, heck even after finishing the show I still don't know their names, they just appeared in episode 2 bantering with the MC as their first time on-screen and seen more as disposable characters than a part of the story itself. The world itself isn't even explained properly, even though the world of floating islands on a ocean-covered planet forcing humanity to use air travel as the primary means of transport for everything is interesting in itself, but I was skeptical if the planet was even covered in water until the last episode where the ocean (or floor in this case I'm not sure what to call it) is shown for the first time because THEY NEVER EVEN EXPLAINED IT..... the plotholes are almost important as they are so numerous and massive that they function like in the holes in a sepak takraw ball if you familiar with that.
But looking at what this show does well is making you enjoy the ride. It is honestly a good feel good show not because they do anything different, but does something we are fakiliar with and knows the the good points and the ridiculous points of it. Like most shounens you know the good guys will never lose, but the MC being unsure or unconfident in winning is bullshit, as everyone already knows they are going to win, and this show is a breath of fresh air in this aspect as the MC is arrogantly confident, and to some comedic effect as well, as he does not shy away from being blatantly the morally wrong guy most of the time, he embraces it, and he honestly feels like how most of us would realistically be when overpowered in a fanstasy world. And he also uses his previous life experience quite liberally, unlike most isekais which just forget that they have the experiences of their previous lives and is just whatever they are in their new lives. Isn't that the fundamental reason of making it an isekai? So that they can build and develop their character with their previous life experiences?
Tl:dr If you are able to shut your brain off while watching it, at least the first few episodes where the introduction is jarring, you will be treated ti what is essentially processed sugar, it isn't good, you know it isn't good, but its taste will still satisfy you, because that's what it did for me, I wanted to feel good being downed, and was really satisfied.
Good show to feel good when feeling down

This is more of a love letter to angel beats than a review. Maybe some will disagree but thats not important to me, what's important is that I get this off my chest more than anything, and know that it is out there and that people can read it.
I first watched this around 2016, when i was 14. It was a critical moment in my youth, even though im still growing and considered young by many, 2016 was the year I had the biggest personality changes, and it was probably the year that fundamentally defined me as a person.
I heard of this show from a
...
youtube channel called glass reflection. Back then I never knew what the hell MAL was or any site that had the service MAL provided, lol i was a dumb 14 year old but who wasn't when they were 13-14. He was my only source of anime reccomendations so when he gave it a review and said he liked it, I decided to give the show a shot. It already finished airing by then, by like 4 years or something, and back then I had alot of time on my hands, being a kid and all, and binged all my anime, which was what I did for this show as well. So there I was, dumb impressionable maturing kid, laptop on top of lap on his bed, setting aside his csgo sesh for a day to binge this new show, not expecting his future to be shaped by a mere few hours of moving drawings.
From what I remember at the time, Angel Beats had one of the best animations in the game, it had the smoothest movements, the crispiest art, the not many but very well done backdrops/locations, which made the school locations memorable and easy imagine the rough locations of places.
The soundtracks were great. I had just joined the guitar ensemble club in my school about a year before, and was stsrting to learn more about music, so i did not really understand it much nor paid any attention to the BGM OSTs yet. Even so, the music already stood out and stuck with me compared to the not many unmemorable soundtracks of anime shows that i have watched before.
Now im going to tie in the characters and the story, because they are effectively the same thing. But first I will talk about the peronalities. Since I was still a child, I had the brain capacity to overanalyze every character personality and why they did this or that etc etc. So i never really found any one of them boring. But now after rewatching it many years later I had found some of them to be quite bland like Ooyama for example. I found that he just follows the others and does not really do anything himself or have any motivations. But maybe that is just because the show did not explore his past. I actually found the MC to be bland at first while rewatching Angel Beats as well, but i actually changed my mind. It's because *spoiler* he died while trying to correct his future by living a normal fruitful life, like any normal boy, for his sister, hence is why he is in fact, normal. *end of spoiler*
This ties nicely into the story. I feel that the story is an amalgamation of the premise/concept and the characters, and that the story is the dependent on the stories of the characters, both the stories of their past and the stories they will create. And that's what make this show the most memorable to me at least. The premise mixed in with the tragic backstories of the characters plus their struggle to find inner peace with their past and move on, taught me a great deal of morals as a young kid, and although some of you might scoff at me for saying that, I found that even until now, many of my personal principles can be derived from this show. For example, never act as though you have it the roughest, have empathy in knowing that someone out there is, not might, but is suffering more than youself and try your best to lend a hand or a heart, or an ear to them, if not all. And the also the fundamental joy of saving a life, which volunteering for a relief effort of sorts is on my bucket list. And the most important, to enjoy life while you are fully able to while in your prime. The story not so much made an impact on my life more so it basically the steel beams that made it. The story of Angel Beats, the story of the characters, the story of the battlefrontiers made that much of an impact to me, that I ugly cried once that day, and another the week after as I almost immediately rewatched it. I had never watched anything like it before, as it entertained me with its comedy, taught me lessons through its story and gave me a unforgettable experience in one night.
Even so, it is not objectively perfect, which even I have realised. Lmao back then I saw the negative reviews and criticism of reviewers and was like," pshh, these people dont know anything, the shows perfect, they can go shove it up their own ar-" But now as i rewatched it I realised yeah, its not perfect, it has its flaws, heres some of em. The switch between comedy and serious was sometimes mistimed. I would say theres about 3-4 major emotional points, with a few other big scenes as well, and a few of them have the comedy transition like half a second after it finishes, kinda takes you out of the moment a tad. Another is what everyone says, the show feels rushed. But heres the thing, I dont feel that it is rushed, rather I feel that they underestimated how endearing the whole cast would be. I mean it is a testament to the show when people day there is not enough of it right?
Now comparing it to anime in general in 2022. I mean sure there are objectively better shows, but despite its age, Angel Beats has aged quite well. For starters, the animation. At the start of the rewatch, i expected it to be super ugly given its age, but surprisingly it held up really well despite the animation style for faces have drastically changed since then. The animation of the more sophisticated movements are, I would say, up there with the best, especially the performances. The playing of the performers sync with the music with energy and enjoyment much higher than many IRL performances, including myself LOL. Their groove with the music is silky smooth, espcially iwasawa tapping her leg while strumming standing up, you can just feel the passion for music, the love for giving people a good show, the love of showing people what you love. You just know she can feel the pleasure from a good performance and it really shows! Another odd little thing is the tracer ricochets from ep 1 or 2 I dont remember, but I just could not help but take note that the tracer ricochets from the automatic weapons were highly realistic and well done as they stream down towards the target, and bounce of like a high pressure jet spraying water at something like a pot. But the sound effects for the gunshots were a different story though, a bland generic unrealistic gunshot sound was used and alot of guns sounded the same, like they only had different sounds for pistols ARs, subs and bolt actions. Alot of cool designs from existing weapons too, albeit a little dispproportionately drawn.
All in all, I guess you could already tell how much I love this show and how much I hold this dear to my heart, as I doubt I will ever get as much of an experience aa Angel Beats haa given me, yes I know it'a because of the circumstance of the age when I first watched this, and yes I know nostalgia is clouding the hell outta my judgement, more like cs gas than cloud lol. But it doesent change the fact that i love this show to the death as one of my favourites of all time, and while it is not my number 1 of all time it is very much up there.
Thanks for reading my review, I know some will disagree with it but it does not matter, I know this show is not perfect to everyone, but it is to me. Thank you Angel Beats for changing my life.
