I just read your review of Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), and I wanted to share my perspective. I completely understand your point of view. Yes, the series is undoubtedly written with a degree of misogyny, which is something I don't endorse.
However, I also believe it's helpful to view it within the context of its time and creator. It was written by a Japanese male author in the 1990s—a culture and era not exactly known for progressive feminism. He was also a disciple of the author of Golden Boy, which explains the clear influence in the way female characters are often sexualized.
What I wanted to express is that, in my opinion, the work goes far beyond that. At its heart, it's a story about the mutual growth between a teacher and his students. While Onizuka starts with selfish intentions, he genuinely matures into a pivotal, positive figure in the lives of his students—all of whom have had terrible experiences with teachers, much like Onizuka himself did in his youth.
Throughout the manga, you see this push-and-pull dynamic between them gradually transform into a truly beautiful relationship. I won't deny that the manga can be ridiculous and bizarre at times, and it certainly sexualizes underage characters on more than one occasion, which is a significant flaw. But for me, it is also so much more than just those elements.
From my perspective, it remains a very worthwhile read, and I just didn't want you to miss out on its deeper merits because of its undeniable shortcomings.
Have a nice day!
