How should I put this... Gintama is incredibly disappointing.

The basic plot about the Aliens (the West) colonizing Edo Japan in the end of the 19th century could have been exploited nicely, but all I got was childish humour relying almost exclusively on inscrutable references and monotonous slapstick. I only watched season 1, but I just can't go any further. I smiled sometimes at first, but then it grew tiresome and eventually too painful to carry on watching.
The characters are not very interesting from what I've seen, which is a pity considering the character design is one of Gintama's strongest ... points. The animation was homogeneous, but totally lacked ambition. The dub was very good, the soundtrack was ok, the OP/EDs were quite generic.

Considering the huge amount of references, I totally get why this show is popular in Japan. However I cannot explain such a global, unanimous acclaim. My guess is this series is so popular on MAL because it did not get much attention in Western countries, and it might be a way for some weaboos and tryhards to distinguish themselves from those they call Narutards.

Or maybe I am just too old for this $#!†.

PS: I will still watch the movies though, hoping they deliver more than the series.

Easily one of the most anticipated animes ever, and really promising after watching 3 episodes.

BUT.

Too many plot holes, contradictions, totally anti-climactic dumb speeches, underdeveloped concepts. Proceeding through suggestion and not developing ideas are two different things, and I think Imaishi kind of messed up with this one.

His previous works had strong ideas brilliantly conveyed through his blend between raw over-the-top energy and parodic/absurd/erotic humour.

TTGL was all about a philosophical manifest for reason and moderation in mankind's progress, plus nekketsu applied to what one must endure to become an adult. It helped me a lot to go through one of my best friends' bereavement, and outpass ... my fear of death.
Panty & Stocking, on the contrary, was a gigantic troll addressed to 'Murica that tends to promote heavily broadcasted vulgarity though they act as though they were sent by God. I hardly burst in laughter because of an anime, but it totally worked with this one.

Kill La Kill stands somewhere between these two extremes, trying to deal with sin, purity, fashion, etc. but never achieves to tie it all together coherently. I'll give this anime a 6 because it is exciting to watch (the action sequences were REALLY good), but I can't give it more because when the series come to an end, there clearly lacks something that encourages you to watch it again. I can't even figure how painful it would be to watch all episodes in a row.
