Yes, they are directed by the same guy: Kunihiko Ikuhara. But all in all their resemblances are related to shoujo and avant-garde tropes. These stories start in a rather peaceful way, growing up to psychological dark twists; they carry heavy symbolism and if I could compare both to a musical genre I would choose Psychedelic Rock. If color related, a shocking pink. They are colorful, dazing and well directed. Also, these shows carry similar key points throughout the plot.

Two misunderstood works of art, depicting teenage students, with their deceit and worries. They share high quality production and well-written characters in common. The main character in both Gamers! and NGE is a reclusive depressive kid, that wants and craves for company and bonds.

They show the long way to the top of a similar wacky gangster world, with a wide vibrant cast and interesting power systems. Also, these shounens share inside conflicts in the family, and a clash between criminal interests.

These shows have a wide range of different characters and motivations, with a eccentric yet uncanny and vintage atmosphere. Also, the openings are vibrant, with wind instruments.
