Welcome to the NHK!- spoilers (Apr 24, 2024)
I put this anime off for about 5 years+, and while it wasn't worth the wait or hype, it was very different from what I expected.
Story:
Hikkimori shut-in with severe social anxiety slowly comes out of his shell through various social interactions, starting with a seemingly conveniently placed pixie dream girl who offers him a contract to start a program to leave his unconventional life.
...
Starts out simple, then it escalates, it's very chatoic, entertaining. The animation does it's job well representing the psychological hang-ups the main character suffers whenever he assumes to leave his comfort zone.
The entire story is him learning to become an adult again, healing from emotional wounds (& he's not the only one), and dealing with people in various ways.
And ultimately whether or not the show or most viewers (with this social struggle) realized it or not, the solution to his particular NEET problems with people: was people.
Characters:
One of the higher praises is not because of Satou, but the people surrounding him that helped him get to where he ended up.
The main character is a typical NEET loser, but it's realistic to see his regressing after he seemingly makes progress but that just makes him look stupid at times. The anime would've been over 5-10 episodes earlier if he wasn't an idiot. But it makes the ending more appropriate for whatever that's worth.
Yamazaki was surprising, I figured he'd be some soft spoken fanboy of Satou's the entire show but his hot temper was actually a positive, he balances out Satou's timid demeanor. And Yamaki's appearance does not reflect how his personality is wired especially when he blows up.
Hitomi, the senpai. Nothing, I feel absolutely nothing towards her. She didn't leave much of an impression on me, the solution to her issues boiled down to a last minute proposal, that's all it took. K.
Kobayashi was a more interesting character, her charisma and ability to talk people into bullshit wwas very fun to watch.
And Kobayashi's brother despite being a more extreme case than Satou, developed 20x faster than Satou and got a damn job. The more hopeless case of NEET, got his shit together faster than the main character. (It was because of Satou he made the change, but how you gonna preach to someone about their downsides when they got it faster than you? Lmfao. Megumi's brother is why Episode 19 is my favorite episode) The dude was so much more far gone than Satous and bounced back faster than a gunshot ricochet. Legend.
Satou's mom, minor presence, awesome lady.
RIP the cat
Misaki, the manipulator.
Where do i even begin with this little mastermind . Because we didn't get much info on her character until the end, not much investment to be had in her throughout the show. Problem #1
Witholding her backstory was a mistake. Because if so much info is withheld from the MC, and a lot of the more dramatic scenes in the later episodes is either hostility or an arms distance dynamic because she's a liar.
Not MUCH of a relationship to warrant him saying he loves her and shit, based on what? Because she brought him food, because of what? Essentially pity, he's a worse case of a failure than her & that was her reason for locking onto him. And she just kept stalking him, it was off-putting.
She just kept latching to him out of habit because she literally and I mean LITERALLY had nothing else. No friends, nothing. If she did? She wouldn't be on Satou's lap 24/7
So the foundation of their happening was not strong at all.
She insults him with this smug air about her while maintaining the cute persona, and the only reason he confesses AFTER he rightfully rejects her attempt to rope him into liking her through another bullshit contract--- is because she tried to unlife herself.
The lazy method to raise stakes & force an emotional climax and payoff at the same time. Instead of them just saying "sorry" and starting over.
So it didn't happen organically, what brought them together was a contrivance. A forced event.
He never apologizes for making her flinch twice by raising his fist at her (first time he stopped himself, the next two times he did it on purpose to watch her reaction. Sadistic shit, very very very odd moment), NEVER addressed.
This was the scummiest thing he did the entire show. Very ugly thing to do when he clearly saw she was scared & suffered some abuse to be acting this way. That's not a normal reaction, she was shaking and everything.
And she never holds it against him and proceeds to bring him food like a DoorDasher...uuuuuuhhh WHAT?!
and it's never explained that she does this because of stockholm syndrome or something, it just breezes over that like we're supposed to feel she deserved to be psyched out like that because she was a slimeball herself.
A very toic dynamic.
He never asks why she was like that, and only finds out because the Uncle just HAPPENED to bring it up at the end of the goddamn show. Huh? If you want me to buy that these two remotely like each other, maybe show some bonding beyond them having mock lectures in a park.
Their relationship started off promising then just fell face first on the pavement & got dragged to the finishline, she keeps hovering around him because she wants him attached to her so she can feel wanted by someone she see's as pitiful, if i'm not mistaken she doesn't apologize for that as he never apologizes for making her flinch defensively, which is something you never do ON PURPOSE to anyone, especially children.
That shit was not a good look, yes she insulted him on a goddamn speeaker, liar, she did it many more times later but again, she never apologizes, why are they even still speaking?
I never got an air of respect between the two, they just ended up together because she was going to off herself.
And when asked what she liked about him by his mother she had nothing but vague responses; and there was no clever payoff to that later where at the end of the show Misaki now has a bunch of in-depth good things to say about him, to audibly display a change since she was last asked the same question & to offset all the times she insulted the guy.
Nope nothing. Contrived, sloppy. Satou's relationship with Hitomi was more believable, at least they had history, as boring a character as she was, at least we knew what her deal was.
I actually wanted them to sleep together despite Misaki, she didn't earn any place in Satou's life and he was a mess.
So the titular couple? Not buying it. One of the weaker points of the show, but them being cutesy in the first half ? Entertaining but ultimately went nowhere until the plot realized: Oh SHIT? 2 Episodes left!!!!
_____________________
I like the premise, but as it dragged on with Satou making dumb decision after dumb decision (The Island arc, I'll give him slack for that, he couldn't have seen that coming & he saved lives).
The anime clearly didn't want to end too soon and just kept pulling filler out of it's ass. This was a time where the Studio shoulda took more liberties with the plot, because while the episodes flow, the story doesn't A LOT of backtracking preventing progress for mc, just to show the people around him making more progress as human beings than him, whic I guess is the point? The irony of Hikkimori who's afraid of human interaction helping people around him figure their shit out, but the pacing of his own development is kicked in the ass for it, only because he always retreats after he makes progress.
If he wasn't shown to be adjusted in the first place, then his regress would make sense. But if you show the guy to seemingly get it, then proceed to show he doesn't, it's less about the condition and more that he's just stupid.
Which is why Misaki targeted him.
Example: The guy knew what Megumi's Marketing scam was about, left the meet and fell for it anyway. Idiot. If he just walked away and stayed consistent, we woulda been saved at least 4 Episodes
The issue is not him getting played, it's that HE KNEW what she was doing, he displayed his intelligence just to backtrack on it. Why even reveal that he knew what her tactics were in the first place? If not to make him look stupid?
Now, all of that led to him helping her brother, but if you had to make the MC (the guy we have to put up with for an entire series) just to help ONE GUY (we get maybe less than 20min with?) There's a better way to do it.
Because as you notice, I repeat, the eldest Kobayashi had a WAY faster recovery than Satou despite being a leagues more worse case, so much worse he was physically abusive to Megumi (presumably the litte sister) that takes care of him like a mom.
(makes leagues more sense in motivation than misaki's devotion to satou)
So what does that say about Satou when you look back at the entire show how at so many pointt's he's around crowds of people no problem, by himself, he seems adjusted, and then BOOM suddenly he's not--- Why procrastinate so much with Satou? When the process did NOT need to be that dragged out.
Now, naturally you don't recover from that level of anxiety & reinforced bad habit overnight, buuuuut that's damn near what happened to the Kobayashi brother, with a couple of days. He crawled his hairy ass to work & just like that got a life, a purpose outside that room.
It's such a crime we didn't get to see more of the Kobayashi siblings after that but that's a good sendoff because their story ended in a good place, and it was well executed.
Hence why EP19 is my favorite Episode, that brother got the same arc than Satou in ONE & a half episodes. This isn't to say that his minor arc was better, but it could've been done in a much tighter shorter format.
With that one character the show's flaw is exposed like an open sore, wasted time, fluff, filler, padding.
It's not believable. Kobayashi did it first, then Satou figures it out, which is redundant because we saw the payoff already with a side character we just met.
Why didn't they just cut the anime shorter and just give the initial payoff to Satou, LMFAO!
Episodes 2-3 almost put me off the show because of all the Schoolgirl fetishization, and pedo-coded bullshit. But obviously that's the point: to show him being a slimey scumbag to develop him eventually.
It's just very odd seeing a grownass man blush & drool as a sexualized child in a game showing her pantiees & crotch or buying a figuring so he can stare at a plastic toy's panty ass.
All i gotta say is (Enjoy that Japanese age of consent upgrade suckers lmfao)
Otherwise VERY HARD to sit through.
Beyond that garbage:
A decently written redemption story for a seriously maladjusted NEET
Not too many characters in your face, and they all serve a legitimate function
Music is actually pretty nostalgic, it reminds me of (The Fox & The Hound) oddly enough
The characters surrounding Satou tend to be more interesting than he is, but that structure works as they all have a role in building up to his eventually coming out his shell
The direction & shots of some of the episodes are well executed
Overall writing is decent
Will I watch this again? NOPE. But it's a decent show, it ain't no 9 out of fucking 10 (seriously? a 9?) but it's definitely above average compared to your average modern entry of pandering garbage.
The narrative that his condition is shown as a condition, not a pride or something to glorify is the best aspect of the topic as it's handled here. It's treated as it should be, a problem, something he needs to be free of, like a fetishist that devotes the equivalent amount of time to learn a language to a creepy fetish community. The show does a good job displaying visually how Satou suffers when he knows he has to make a change but physically can't because he's just that broken, conditioned to believe that there isn't more to explore in life.
His issue, as with any NEET, boiled down to fear of risk for fear of failure, thus rejection to even try. Wings of Redemption in a nutshell.
The show didn't explicitly state that was the overall issue, but it got close, but that's what I kept thinking the entire way through.
Not often you get a slice of boring anime with an actual constructive point, while I'm not watching this again in full, I'll definitely skim through it because a lot of these episodes are good (EP19). It just didn't need to drag as long as it did.
If they edited the plot to flow a little better without Satou regressing so needlessly (not him regressing at all being the problem but at times it was just needless backtracking), if that was tighter & the finale dilemma wasn't so forced and melodramatic, it'd definitely be higher on my ratio.
IF we're being honest, it is not a goddamn 9, but it's definitely one of the better slice of life anime that's not centered around a goddamn school or some stupid teenagers, grownass adults dealing with adult issues. And by the end, despite my issues with the pacing, & some characterizations, it resolves enough of the show to where I'm mostly satisfied with what I got for how long i waited to finally watch it.
Recommended, it ain't not masterpiece but it's a gem in it's genre, ESPECIALLY compared to today's garbage.
Watch it at least once.

The same situation as the first season:
*Good writiing *fast paced gags *the gags are actually funny *the side characters are charming & serve very concise purposes to the narrative of the short, thus not useless *it's not set in a stupid highschool *---thus no pedo jailbait bullshit. In fact in the entire show, it doesn't even entertain creepy pedo bullshit, not even once. (Props to you writers *cheers) *99% of the cast are adults, so no teen shenanigans *a diverse cast of colorful characters that are actually more unique than the average shonen lineup; *In Season 2 things actually feel like they have progressed since prior season, it's technically a new year in-world, ... A good portrayal of the struggles of a handicapped child, good portrayal of children as a whole.
Well paced, well directed, most importantly: Well acted. The main heroine is basically a shonen protagonist in a little girls body, she's full of spirit and guts. So much fire in such a frail vessel. Like other movies with a disability theme there are characters that give the mc a hard time, but realistically come to terms in their own way with accepting or turning away from such differences. As far as anime movies go involving disability, this is one of the better films, it's not too lengthy, it's ... Nov 29, 2022
