For some context, I'm a guy who likes comedies, especially ones with an absurd premise.

So when I heard of Onimai, a show about a male NEET in his 20's suddenly gets turned into a female middle schooler by his younger sister as a some sort of rehabilitation plan, I immediately got hooked.

I started wondering what kind of funny shenanigans our protagonist would encounter. How will he deal with the fact that he may never be able to get his non-existent rod up, or how him being turned into a girl would affect his admittedly not so gentlemanly hobbies.

Unfortunately, the show doesn't do much with this ... premise, and instead it decides to become a run of the mill CGDCT show.

Mahiro, our gender swapped protagonist, might as well be a girl in the first place, since her male background never affects her personality in any way that makes her different from the overly shy and awkward neet girl personality trope that you'd commonly see in any other show.

The show rarely talks about the protagonist's life before being gender swapped other than that he's a porn addicted neet.

How did he turn into a neet? I dunno.

Does he have any other hobbies other than porn or just cliché anime nerd stuff? I dunno, the show never talks anything about his male background.


It just doesn't do anything with the gender swapped premise other than the occasional semi funny joke about how he isn't used to this girly stuff.

It genuinely feels like this story was supposed to be a regular CGDCT show, but midway through writing the story, the writer thought they might as well add the whole gender swap thing and instead of rewriting the entire story to fit this premise, they just changed a few lines and called it a day.

It's frustrating to see such a good premise that filled with endless possibilities for laughter, gets tossed away in favor of a generic CGDCT story.

If you're into comedies and want a good laugh, then avoid this anime and go watch something else because this show isn't for you (and for me).
