Spoilers.
Regardless of east or west, as an Asian myself, I can assure westerners that culture =/= common fictional work you might hear about. Don't assume that 18+ VNs with assault are standard in JP culture. It's a niche genre, and the average JP will likely react as harshly as we've seen westerners behave. I live in a diverse Asian community and have friends in both east and south Asian cultures. This is my credibility in refuting obvious westerner ignorance. Other anime, like World's Finest Assassin, handled it better, much like DAO.
Sometimes ahowing less creates more hatred to the topic.
The pilot episode was great until you
...
see a goblin line himself up to sexually assault a young woman. How this didn't get censored for triggering real victims, I don't understand. But it isn't just that visual, it's seeing the dead eyes as the woman is obviously bring assaulted. The anime isn't rated as ecchi, thus the continual reference to assault in later episodes, on the level of monster ecchi, is off-putting.
Setting the pilot episode aside, I found the story lackluster. GS wasn't as dynamic & mysterious as, say, Mando. He witnessed deep trauma, yes. I'd found the diverse party interesting, but the lizard guy's obsession with cheese was the only thing that kept me going. Just give me a spinoff with that character and the dwarf. I'll take a gourmet spinoff any day.
I was told that there's huge character development, but how much of the author's assault fetish do I need to keep up with? If it's not basically shown, it's heavily referenced,to remind you that it exists. We get it. But in terms of pacing, I just couldn't get excited about the anime. I've seen some dark anime, and thrillers. I've gone through Claymore, Ergo Proxy, Boogiepop Phantom. They at least had a hook. This just had a boing boing talk like a sloth, and legally not Elder Scrolls act as deus ex machina. And sometimes the cleric was useful.
