As a reader of the manga, the movie surpassed my expectations for what I believed they could fit into only an 1 hour and 30 minutes of screentime.
The first half is a mild slice of life, romance and is paced fantastically to make the watcher feel for a character in just over 40 minutes of their first appearance. The visuals are beautiful and immaculately animated with some of the highlights of the movie being when they switch art style to enhance a scene. The biggest stand out for me was the music, the slower and softer songs for the romance sound beautiful and increased
...
my overall enjoyment of the scene dramatically over the manga, the music added so much.
The second half is where the movie really kicks it up, the animation (while different from season 1) still looks remarkable and my biggest gripe with season 1 has been fixed, while season 1 was fantastic I feel the 3D occasionally didn't mix very well and brought me out of it quite a few times. However the movie fixed this with most of the 3D being used as a base and then being drawn over to it only being used sparingly and was a lot less noticeable overall.
Overall I would recommend this movie to anyone, even people who haven't watched season 1, because of how well self contained this Arc is you could watch this on it's own and still get the story overall. But it is definetely recommended you watch season 1 before this as it will only enhance the experience, but if you have a partner you want to bring along who hasn't watched season 1, you can and they should be able to watch the movie just fine.
