Both manga are dark fantasy epics with questionable starts that gradually evolve into absolute masterpieces with art and concepts comparable with one another. Bastard!! is far more goofy and over top at times but still delivers fantastic moments. The character design of Gara is vaguely reminiscent of Guts. Just like Beserk, Bastard!!'s later arcs recontextualizes everything that came before it.
