My views are not influenced by users of this site. Which would explain why they I so different from others. I'm not a person who is content with just the sole act of consuming media without any form of intellectual analysis of what I have consumed. In short, I always try to find meaning in what I have consumed. You look at a manga like freesia and its hapazard story line which is prone to different interpretations from different people. There by leading to different ratings for it. To me, it was nothing more than a japanese elaboration on the effects of war and misogyny. It was nothing more than trash which was clearly influenced by the authors obsession with american Vietnam movies, and the ever problematic conservatism of Japanese society. The conservative aspect can clearly be seen in my criticism of japanese media in general (see the horror that is death note on the issue of conservatism and japan, or to be more precise the concept of justice)
Which begs the question, what do I consider to be a good anime or manga and what is the basis of my conclusion in coming to such a decision? Mmm What is the war on terror for one? Is it a new form of neo-colonisation of the east by the imperialist west or a dedicated campaign which is aimed at bringing about world peace and bring us to the fabled condition known as Utopia. The answer clearly for that can be found in the west's activities in their other campaigns in the east. But than again we not in the east, but on the net and exchanging views on japanese media.
Japanese Media. That is the answer to how I rate my anime and manga, Japanese media. Being a person who is heavily influenced by the West. The styles that I adopt when reading a book, watching a movie or a series, are the same ones I use when I judge the quality of japanese media. Thus my pre-conceived western tendencies have come to the conclusion that Japanese manga artist are not great authors, based on my past experiences from books I have read.
The most important intellectual question for me, thus has always been - does a good artist (manga) make a great author at the same time? The answer thus far for me has been a comprehensive NO.
Cheers
Anime and manga are the RIGHT medium for intellectual appreciation, to a certain extent. That extent would the classification of the medium into its various groupings. For one, I have a high expectation when it comes to script, when I'm dealing with seinen. And from what I have read on this site, people ALWAYS attache intellectual appreciation on all Japanese media (even for One piece). If you are interested in intellectual baggage, when it comes to anime, you should read "reviews" on Neon Genesis Evangalion. All sorts of conspiracies whether intellectual or religious have been attached on that anime my users of this site and across the net.
But than again people are entitled to their own opinions.
E7 is pretty good so far. Great character devellopment and a lot of interesting lore. I must admit though that I'm veeery confused about what is happening in the story :/
There is a lot of vocabulary that I'm still not totally habituated, so I hope that at one point, it will just flow naturally for me.
