Hello everyone, ready for my review of Pluto? Well I got good news for you! That's what I shall be doing now! So let's jump into it lads! Here is my review of Pluto! By the author Naoki Urasawa and animated by Studio M2, the first of their work I've seen!
Basic Premises/Why I watched it:This was inevitable after the trash of Astro Boy 2009 I needed a good Astro Boy series, but instead of watching somthing like Astro Boy 1963, Go Go Atom or Robot Atom. I uncoverd Pluto via people talking about it. So eventually when I got to it I booted up my
...
TOTTALY LEAGAL STREAMING SERVICE I found on the Play Store and gave Pluto a watch! So let me tell you about Pluto, and how it became an anime that surpassed Barefoot Gen!
Animation:I don't focus much on animation, but where credit is due... this is the best animation I've seen... period, I'm suprised by how such a small studio could afford it, hopefully by not overworking there workers... but I wouldn't be suprised considering how common it is in the anime industry
Intro Song:Sadly it dosen't really have one... so yeah. But let's get into the charcters!
Gesicht:I surprisingly love him! They managed to take a somewhat obscure charcter that only apperad in the Pluto Arc for a brief moment just to be killed by Pluto. But in this he is a main charcter with a story arc! He tries to overcome the hatred he felt when Adolf's Brother kills Gesicht adopted son, and out of pure anger he kills Adolf's brother, which is reasonable I be it stupid, but to be fair he wasn't thinking right at that moment. Then later in the story he is forced to confront his past with Adolf and he pays Adolf back by sacrificing himself to save Adolf! Honestly, that should've been when he died, it would have gone full circle, from killing Adolf's Brother to sacrificing himself for Adolf... but then they HAD to bring him back just a little longer before getting killed by Ali, which I'll talk about soon! Don't you worry!
Atom/Astro Boy:Honestly! I like him in this iteration, he's more interesting, though they turned down the focus of the original him and began focusing on somthing new, Atom leraning hatred and struggling to control it like Gesicht which was honestly interesting, though a bit repetitive considering Gesicht already went through that, but it makes sense he did though considering Atom was given the memories of Gesicht and Epislion combined with Dr. Tennma installing hatred into him for him to wake up quicker, after a bit Atom for now got through it, after just thinking, considering Dr. Ochanomizu was very close by he should've been the one to comfort him and help him out of his enraged state. Then it comes back when he fights Pluto, and it's fair he should be mad that this monster killed multiple robots that were staring to recover from the war and live good lives, he was absolutely reasonable to crash out! Though him and Pluto suddenly making up is a bit sudden and undeveloped, but that is somthing I'll dive into Pluto himself about, so yeah, still though this is one of my favorite iterations of Atom yet, definitely tied with 2003 or even surpassing 2003 Atom for me
Epsilon:Epislon is a bit of an ignigma of a character, its like you combined Epislion 1980's powers with Epislion 2003's design though 2003 Epislion is female, werid huh? Anyways I love Epislion and his relationship with those children he adopted after they lost there parents in the war, and it's reasonable why Epislion didn't partake in the war, wars are kinda pointless, and the United States of Thraica (Aka the USA) took the wrong approach in Epislion's eyes. I also love how he beacomes the main protagonist for a bit after Gesicht's death. And not to mention Epislion's Birthday scene... that was just... so wholesome, but its kinda stupid he died no? He only destroyed Pluto's arm and let's him live but yet Pluto still kills him, meanwhile Atom literally tries to kill him and almost doe but Pluto is fine with it? If this was the 2003 anime I would understand? And the reason I will get into when I talk about Pluto more in-depth so don't worry, so overall, this is my favorite version of Epislion, above 2003 by quite a bit and overall is my favorite charcter in Pluto but not my favorite charcter in Astro Boy or even side charcter... sorry Epislion... hehe. AND SHOULD I EVEN MWNTION EPISLION'S RELATIONSHIP WITH Wassily!
The Other Robots:I love all these guys two, from North #2 leraning how to play piano too Brando forming his own little family too Montblanc protecting nature too Hercules continuing to do fights... though I do view Hercules as the weakest link out of all of them I still absolutely loved them!
Uran:This is my favorite iteration of her hands down, there is no contest sure, she isn't as tomboyish but I don't really care, she's a lovely charcter who cares for everyone, from Atom to even random people and wild animals she finds and even her time spent with Pluto I like, though the Pluto-Uran relationship isn't as good as the 2003 or 1980 versions, that I will admit, but it isn't Uran's fault it's Pluto's for sure! And... DON'T WORRY... I'LL GET TO HIM! But yeah, I had alot of fun with Uran, though she is the worst designed, she's giving me Earwig and the Witch flashbacks... yikes!
Dr. Ochanomizu:He's his usual self, though more serious in this version which makes sense considering Pluto is a more serious adoption compared to 2003, while yes serious can be goofy especially at the beginning, but not goofy in a bad way, meanwhile 1980 is not serious at all, for reasons I could do it's own review on. But back yo Ochanomizu, I like this version, isn't my favorite be he's still a great character as always
Principal Bran/Hige Oyaji:I'm here to celebrate the fact they brought him back as a teacher/principal one of my biggest complaints about Astro Boy 2003 was how much they changed the character, I understand Metropolis probably just came into existence and in there he was a detective... but I think they forgot the whole "Tezuka Super Star Program" which means charcters from other series are also in other series as actors if that makes any sense. But I'm just glad Bran is back in the educational field again! Now it's the time you all have been waiting for... Pluto
Pluto:Look how they massacred my boy... this is my least favorite incarnation of him debateblely, don't get me wrong, he is scary... but that's it... he's a scary monster crybaby unlike Pluto 2003, Pluto 2003 was intelligent, was he a monster, yes, but he was smart, same with 1980, and 2003's redemption was believable as he begins to question himself, should he really just be a killing machine? And 1980 dose an even better job with his redemption arc sacrificing himself. Yes the Pluto I'm reviewing did the same... but it wasn't nearly as earned as 1980's for sure! And don't get me started on 2003's relationship with Uran! It was beautiful! To the point it almost cuased me to root for him when Atom interrupts the two... I just wish they did more with Pluto... I'm disappointed! Next time... DO BETTER!
Baru-1589:I love this guy! He's a sadistic little f*ck and he knows it! I was actively clapping when he killed Dr. Roosevelt and almost chocked the president guy to death! He's just a blast to see!
Dr Abullah:What an interesting replacement for Shadow, such a sad but yet good antagonist! He is the true main villan of this series! Not Pluto... and Dr. Abullah beacoming the metaphor of hatred was absolutely beautiful! What an good antagonist, I apologize I'm not saying much about him. But still an amazing Villian, and the twist that he is not even the real deal... that was very nice! Though a bit out of nowhere
Ali:Why did Ali have to be a bad guy? I know what they are doing here, they are trying to replicate 1980's Light Ray Boy or 2003's Denkou (My favorite Astro Boy side charcter) But he just sorta fails as we are given zero context on how he would get from Persia to the Netherlands or even why he would try to kill Gesicht? And then he dies right after! Ali is really trying to be Light Ray Boy SO BAD but fails miserablely at that! Heck, Anton would make more sense! He's in the Netherlands and has a link to Pluto/His other persona
Final Nitpick:Its kinda silly Atom in this never got hatred until the end of the story... like seriously if we were following the logic of this anime, he should've leraned hatred ATLEAST after Light Ray Boy's death. Side note, the fact there is no references to Atlas, the main antagonist in the 1980 and I assume the 1963 version aswell is just sorts saddening
Final Thoughts:Even though it's flawed it is with no doubt my favorite Astro Boy adaptation ever! If you want to watch a gritty sci-fi about robots and the effects of war... don't watch Black Magic M-66. Watch Pluto! I'm sure wherever Osama Tezuka is right now, in hevan, reincranated whatever, is proud of the work Naoki... stand proud... I'm sure Tezuka is proud of you! Hopefully, idk what he's thinking? I can't read minds!
