If I were smarter and valued my time more, I should've dropped this at episode 4 or 5, because right then I had a strong hunch it wouldn't get any better. But I was in the mood to watch something chill and too bored to research anime, so I managed to finish it. My suspicion was correct, though. It didn't get better, and in the end, I was left with a sour taste in my mouth.
It goes like this: Except the main character, almost everyone in the show has a twisted mind, either because they lack an appropriate sexual education or because they're straight up
...
perverts. So when the MC talks, the others take it as if he's implying something erotic. Sometimes he'll get flustered; sometimes he just calmly accepts that people around him are not right in the head and moves on. This gag is repeated across the entire show, in every episode, in a frantic way. I guess that the jokes are partially lost in translation and they're supposed to be funnier in Japanese. All I can say is that watching this with English subtitles, my experience was quite underwhelming.
Another gag is when a passerby overhears a conversation that has a double meaning (and therefore appears to be about something sexual as well), which develops into a misunderstanding. They really go overboard with this, and it just... doesn't work that well. For example, there's a scene where the MC's friend has her hands tied, so she asks him for a few favors, like feeding her and taking her to the toilet. Eventually, she asks him to brush her teeth, and when he accepts, the scene is cut to her making a bunch of noises that imply oral sex. Of course, that isn't the case and we know we're about to see him brushing her teeth — which happens a second later. But there's no surprise or punchline, just what we expect to see. And the only reason I can think for some of these scenes be included is that the creators were too close to the deadline and couldn't come up with anything better.
But all things considered, If you want to watch this it'll be because of the comedy, which, as everyone knows at this point, very much depends on one's personal taste. I found it to be mostly dull and repetitive, though I had a few laughs here and there if I'm being honest.
Aside from the jokes, the growing romantic relationship between the main characters takes place in the background, but that's kept to a minimum. The primary focus is really comedy.
For better or for worse, the quality level of the show is maintained from beginning to end with little variation, so you can pick one episode and if you like it, then you'll probably enjoy the rest, too; and if you don't like it, the same applies and you can save your time.
Now, regarding the ecchi part, you'd think that a show with this setting would lead to many spicy moments, but that's not the case here. Such scenes are very scarce and generally don't go beyond the regular panty shots. Much of the ecchi stems from what is said rather than what is shown. So if you come to this thinking it's going to be a borderline hentai sort of show, such as To LOVE-Ru Darkness, you'll be hugely disappointed.
Not much can be said about the technical aspect other than the music and art are decent. Although there were some instances where the bodies of the characters looked oddly disproportionate. Not sure if that was intended, but it's certainly noticeable. This is just nitpicking, though. They also play around with the animation a bit, like making the facial expressions in a completely different art style, which is kind of nice. But overall, everything is pretty normal (except for a freaking weird dog that appears in one episode).
In conclusion, If you came to this for the rom-com story or the ecchiness, you'll be disappointed. It's a pure lighthearted comedy. You will find many shows more worth of your time, but it won't cost you too much to check out one episode and decide for yourself.
