Tokyo ghoul root A was actually really good. I know that it's not like the manga and it deviated a lot from the manga but even though, the anime is pretty great, as a stand alone anime. I have made my own analysis based on my own anime experience. (I've read some volumes of the tokyo ghoul manga). I tried my best to have as much less spoilers in it as possible, but I've written a little spoiler of the manga and a little detail of the last episode of Root A.
I agree that the anime didn't had much content in it
...
and if they would have added a little more detail about the characters and their introduction then it might have been perfect. But this all happened due to the "12 episodes per season" concept. The Tokyo Ghoul season 1 covered till 66 chapters of the manga, with excluding some content. So according to this 12 episodes is able to cover at an average of about 5 to 6 manga chapters, with excluding some scenes and it's generally fine adaption. So the remaining chapters were to be adopted in the Root A, which were around 78 chapters. So there weren't any chance they could have adopted that much chapters in 12 episodes, which is also why the :re anime turned out to be a very bad manga adaption (:re, both seasons, were very rushed and they adopted around 176 chapters in 24 episodes).
But The Root A, although being most non-canon, didn't turn out that bad. The manga and the anime both lead to the Re: arc.
Root A did have less content and story in it and it's also changed a lot from the manga, Like Kaneki had made his own group in the manga and the kanou lab arcs in the manga. But even though with the less content of Root A, it did succeed in achieving itself well off as a stand alone, at least for me :).
The Root A anime had a great art and graphics, it had improved from first season. It might not be the best, but it turned out to be very comfortable and intriguing.
The sound was the key of the Root A anime. The OST insert songs were rightly placed and were very suitable with the storyline of the anime. This is also one of the reasons which made the anime more intriguing, ameliorated and accentuated the anime.
As I agree there weren't more scenes of the main characters like Kaneki, Touka or Hide but it was suffice. I liked the part how it showed the mental instability of Kaneki and how he was damaged and depressed inside.
LITTLE SPOILER AHEAD:
The last non-canon episode was very well written, the last meeting of Kaneki and him was very captivating and him explaining how he always supported and helped him from the back and his death was all very emotional and surprising. The last slow walk with acoustic unravel was also very sentimental showing what path Kaneki had chosen was wrong and instead destroyed him. I wish that this anime ending could've been canon and could've been in the manga as this ending was very much more realistic and sympathetic and it also showed more of the "dead" friend thoughts and desires and his innocent wishes. The only thing missing in the Root A anime ending was the Kaneki vs Arima fight, they should've showed the fight in the ending or in the starting of :re or in the flashbacks of :re. But apart from this the ending was outstanding, it changed the impact of the anime as a whole and also giving a realistic touch to the anime as how the real pain and emotions looks like and how a person feels alone.
(I didn't use his name so I hope you can figure out the name if you want).
Root A, overall, was very entertaining as a whole and melancholic realistic too for atleast me. It was very well choreographed and directed too and even with the lack of content, it achieved decent grounds of animes. For me the first and the season were both best in their own ways. The first season seemed a little rushed to me while the second season seemed to lack a little content and development to me. But even though with all these lackings, the anime covered it's flaws wonderfully. The anime might not be as good if compared to the manga. But it has reached good mark as a stand alone anime. I wish :re anime could've also been like them atleast. I'd want to give the anime 9.5, if it had the option :). Like I said, Root A was great and it's ending was outstanding as a stand alone anime.
