Was so looking forward to this due to my sword and sorcery craze, but left pretty disappointed and still glad I watched it. The first and especially can't stress this enough final episode are so incredibly on it makes the middle portion all the more disappointing. A crazy ending will usually make me like something overall, but that wasn't the case here. I wish it had been 6 or 7 episodes, not 13.
Ok so the animation is consistently I'd say a little better than average. Nowhere near the highs of classic OVAs with shorter run-times, but always decent. It's really carried in parts by such
...
strong character designs and really gorgeous backgrounds. Especially in that middle though, there are SO MANY sliding JPGs it started to get distracting. I have a lot of patience for beautiful old Cel animation, but it really took me out of most of the action near the end. Like, this is an epic dragon showdown this should be awesome, but watch them slide in and out of frame at each-other. Oh. I'm bored as hell. (the dragon designs are phenomenal though, really scary!)
The plot is straight-forward traditional fantasy which could and should have been wonderful, but just became a mess in the middle. Something can be very genre and still incredible if it hits all those notes (Dragonslayer 1981!!!) even in a post-Peter Jackson LOTR/Xena etc. world (fantasy at it's most emotional and intense with great character work, before the post-fantasy ironic hell we're in now). Around episode 5 the plot just crawled along, it was predictable but also lacked any real action or spectacle for the majority of the time, I just found it very difficult to push through to the end even though I was into what it was doing overall. There's still some good there ofc, evil sorceress, heroic sacrifice, final showdown, crazed berserker, the cycle of good vs evil, new heroes and villains replacing the old, but it never is portrayed or described very effectively, it just lacks energy.
The main cast is fine, they become pretty likable by the end if never really fleshed out. The one benefit of the longer run-time. It's really Deedlit's show though, if there is one thing that kept me watching it was her. You can tell a lot of love went into portraying her, and she's such a competent, active force in the story, brings some much needed life and lightness. I can't actually put into stupid human words how obsessed I now am with her, I LOVE DEEDLIT! Now the bad, I at first liked Parn, again I don't hate tropes and I got he was the every-man hero growing into his strength, ok. He remains so boring throughout the show and is so incredibly stupid, like idiotic, near the finale I really came to dislike him. Ashram and Pirotess were significantly more interesting to me at times.
Now I'm going to go full Steinem-san so get ready. She got a pretty developed character at the end, but ofc there is some natural iffy-ness about having the evil "dark" elves literally being darker skinned and more scantily clad compared to the good "light" elves. But it was the 90s and that's the design they were adapting, context and everything. Minor spoilers for the finale (you can probably guess what happens though) the fact that my girl Deedlit was so op with her elf powers and easily the best part of the show and then she gets fucking captured to be sacrificed at the end, fuck this show. I wasn't surprised, but I was disappointed. HOW FUCKING LAME SHE WAS THE ONE PART I REALLY WAS ENJOYING!
Final thoughts: Watch the first and last episode, watch comps of Deedlit's scenes, watch the OP and ED which are simple but great. I liked the ending and there are worse things to watch for sure, but I can't help but think about how much more impactful it would have been after 6 eps of a more focused show. Also who else thought Parn was kind of gay for Kashue? ALL HAIL DEEDLIT!

Started watching this because other users loved it so much and it just completely exceeded my expectations. I've always kind of struggled to get into comedy anime, but I was seriously laughing out loud at just about every episode of Galaxy Angel. The episodes are the perfect length to introduce a concept and the character pairs, cue rapid fire jokes and unique visual gags, and then stick the landing and it just really worked for me. Because the characters all have such extreme personalities it's just so inherently funny to see how they bounce off one another, it's great. I loved how ridiculous every concept
...
was and how incompetent they were as a group, fave gag from the series is Vanilla being a Christian lol
It's so amazingly good that you just take one character like that and you have the visual jokes, Vanilla's completely blank expression, the character pairs, how the others expect her to react normally/don't notice her weirdness, on top of the actual gag of her like throwing a priceless object into space. And this is followed up with 10 more jokes from the rest of the cast all with their personalities at 10. It's so frantic, colorful, and fun, it was like anime crack.
Definitely watch if you're into comedy anime especially the 90s/2000s kind, if you like the anime space/military aesthetic, or if you like cute girls. I would only say avoid if you don't like that fast-paced very of its time kind of comedy, or are looking for something more serious.
OP was fun and catchy loved the goofy CGI of their ships that makes it look like an action series, the ED was my fave though, very sweet and calm.
The art wasn't the most polished, but I never thought it looked too rough or unrecognizable and for the kind of show it was I would say it looks better than average. There are a lot of fun visual gags that keep it interesting even when it's simple.
I don't really know how to rate the story, there isn't really one. I'd say it's a great premise that has unlimited comedic potential and it never pretends it's anything but pure fun.
The characters are the main focus, and they're all great and get pretty equal screen-time. So funny that the games are supposedly pretty serious lol. Forte superiority forever!!!

I recently watched the first Yuna OVA which was a lot of fun so I thought I'd check this out. I've never played the games before either. First two episodes, I agreed a lot with what others have said about the series suffering from moving away from the ridiculous more comedic approach of the first OVA and honestly I was kind of struggling to get through it. But then that third episode happened and it kind of really really clicked for me.
For such a short series and such a short OVA on its' own, you really start to root for these ladies. The dramatic
...
shift starts to feel earned and genuinely engaging, the animation picks up quality, and the sweet sweet OVA mech lady action scenes really start doing their thing, it just kind of goes from -5 to 1,000 in that last act.
Overall, there are still plenty of funny moments, Yuri is great. The animation is a little messier than the first OVA, but I think it comes through where it really counts and is still OVA quality great looking. The character/robot designs are still god-tier and the music remains 90s cute. Didn't love the OP except Yuna's business chic ensemble, but the ED is very cute and in this great doodle-style.
Final thoughts: the villains and their powers were pretty awesome, easily what kept me watching. Loved that the first episode was Christmas themed (lol) and it's just fun to watch an action series where every single character is a cute girl! Recommend but only for people who really love the source material/first OVA and have the patience to get through those first episodes, I think it's worth it.

I'm not familiar with the video games or other media this OVA is based on, but even so I found it really enjoyable and easy to follow! Definitely moves at a break-neck pace, and it can feel like only a glimpse of the broader franchise, but because the plot is simple it never becomes confusing or obnoxious, just fun. That's the key word for this OVA, just pure mech 90s cute girl anime fun!
Because it's an OVA, the animation was very solid and all the character designs were especially beautiful. Soundtrack is fun, again very 90s. The OP is great, really dorky and catchy, the
...
ED is cute but just fine. My only complaint would be that there isn't a ton of action which is kind of disappointing with how great the suit and robot designs are, but again because so much is going on every moment and every character is so fun to watch, I didn't mind that much.
Great way to spend an afternoon, especially for 90s comedy anime lovers!

The animation/art style is completely beautiful and big reason why I gave this ONA a shot. Along with this, the soundtrack was great, OP was amazing and the ED was sweet but simple!
Ok so story, definitely major TW for mental health, self-harm, abuse topics in the show, seriously avoid if you think that will upset you at all. The first episode alone is very very graphic even if you know what's coming, I wouldn't even power through it really if you're at all worried about that.
On the one hand, I think it's great to see anime tackling such tough subject matter. On the other,
...
I was really worried going into this that it might stumble around the very very very thin line it draws for short, simultaneously cute/comedy and graphic/drama anime to tackle these themes. I would say it was kind of a miracle and achieving this balance up to episode four, and then it kind of sways into ridiculous anime melodrama territory. It's one thing to discuss tough topics and to contrast cute aesthetics with this as a means of portraying complexity and to provide levity to them. It kind of starts to feel more like I guess cruel at some point though, yes life can be horrible and sad and nonsensical like the show tells you, but when every adult character starts to act mean and evil to such a degree, it becomes unbelievable. I see so many scenes of violence and the characters anime sobbing and I think ok what is this actually trying to say here? It starts to feel like those sad anime girl compilations of them being beat up, and that one scene from Elfen Lied, made to make you upset.
By the exact final scene, I would say that they stuck the landing, but I think the major divide for people will be how they feel the journey there was handled/portrayed and if they feel like they want to go through 5 episodes of tiring emotional misery to get there. I really appreciate the risk taking, the beautiful portrayal, and for such a short series I think it does a good job making a point and being respectful while still being funny and engaging. But I'm just not sure if everything along the way was earned or added to that message, that's where I'm conflicted. Oh, I also thought Takopi was sooooo cute, pi!!!!!!

Cute way to end out these series, and it's only about 6 minutes so worth the watch. I loved the Magic User's Club OVA but couldn't track down the tv series anywhere. Just finished Shamanic Princess and am currently obsessed with it (lol) needless to say I'm a big fan of both so it's nice to see any additional content from them since they're so short. It is funny so see such a cute show paired with something as melancholy as SP, that was fun. Now to try and fill the OVA shaped hole in my otaku heart.
Thank you BandDog_Onymou for all the additional info!

I originally saw this OVA mentioned in regards to the Magic User's Club (which I loved!) vs. Shamanic Princess epilogue and that it was by the same studio and thought it sounded interesting, had no idea that it would actually be incredible. Watch if you're a fan of 90s animation, magic/summoning battles, or sub-textual yuri.
The first thing you'll probably notice is that the art is beautiful and that holds true throughout. There is definitely a lot more slow, atmospheric moments than action scenes though, although both are great. The character designs alone are so simple but just so incredibly strong. The OP and ED
...
are both great, especially the ED it's super groovy and chill. The characters are maybe where the series could have used some more development, but idk, I think they get there in the end. To pack so much world-building and just pure coolness and beauty into one 6 episode series, it's really incredible. I also loved the whole shaman angle, that kept it really fresh.
The first episode was pretty good especially the fight scene, but directly after that I really started to get bored. Definitely worth holding out to the third episode, seriously, it's only a 6 part OVA. One thing to know before going in is that the last two episodes are more like a prologue, which I'm still not really sure if I liked that format or not.
I'll admit, the plot in the first four episodes can be a little confusing (but still enjoyable) and I thought it flowed a lot better in the final two episodes. Overall though, it's just such a unique and cool little series, DO NOT SKIP IT! The whole thing feels like something that would come on tv late at night or like the best anime ever that you would see in a dream, it's so good. I legit teared up at the end, now for the epilogue!
(I really hope the fandom for it grows, it deserves it!)

Saw a listing for this on Ebay and thought it looked interesting. I love anime witches so it was also up my alley. Really happily surprised that beyond fun designs and beautiful 90s animation, this cute OVA is genuinely charming and funny and gives you just enough to invest in!
The plot isn't anything crazy and while a lot of the series is more slice-of-life, enough of a main conflict is maintained to keep you interested. The comedy is legitimately funny, it's that over the top 90s kind and it really works especially the physical stuff. Loved the mixture of 90s anime sci-fi elements with
...
the more typical magic club stuff too, cool contrast. The show's magic is fun also, how they're like magicians and use cards, that kept the whole concept fresh.
I was worried about the depiction of Aburatsubo, who is clearly gay, since it's an older show, but even though it's a little dated, came away feeling like he was depicted surprisingly well overall! Also loved his design and how the guy magicians had the same cool outfits as the ladies!
Final thoughts: for such a short OVA it's pretty incredible, none of it feels like filler and while it tells a story on the smaller scale, it still manages to be really compelling. Worth watching if you want something fun and light-hearted with magic. There were several moments that really reminded me how magic in anime should be portrayed, as actually magical and surreal, really beautiful!
