Gonna keep it short and spoilers free.
Story itself is predictable and cliched, but thats not the issue. It could have been a nice story of tragic love, of lovers, separated and wounded by flames of war and trying to accept their loss and deal with it, and thats the impression story gives at start, at least in show.
But the further it goes, the more obvious it becomes that author is INTENTIONALLY trying to squeeze tears by overstretching it and adding hardly meaningful episodes rather than keep story compact but interesting. This movie is not exception, story of boy in hospital was NOT needed, show already

A great story that is clearly based on Higurashi, which is actually mentioned by Daru in Boukan no Rebellion manga (plus Suzuha's seyu is same one who voiced Rika Furude (Yukari Tamura), and opening is performed by Kanako Ito).
Sadly, story is not as good as in inspirational material author used, it feels more like a Higurashi tribute to me. Characters are interesting and memorable, but storytelling is messy at times and level of drama and psychological suffering are just not as high as they could have been.
