So, Digimon decided to do something different by not doing Digimon and making it about apps instead of the Digital World. And putting that at the forefront with a strange power system and a pretty useless and wimpy protagonist. And I think in a way, distancing itself from Digimon does it a favor in terms of expectations from viewers but from Digimon fans who have come to it because it still has the Digimon name on it, they’ll only be disappointed, especially as it comes at the end of a long string of disappointments since Adventure. I can’t even think of what this series is ...

Here we go. Another day, another terrible JoJo. I really should stop thinking that each new series could redeem the series. This continues the trend of Stands being an absolutely horribly written power mechanic. I mean why they couldn’t have just continued using Hamon is beyond me, it was much better and not complete trash writing. And then let’s move on to the characters. Oh my god what massively bad writing, it’s not just that the characters were paper thin and had no room to develop. Now I don’t know how faithful to the manga this is but oh my word, the characters are so ...

I slog through a lot of dreg in this genre. For every hidden gem that you really like, there’s thirty anime that you’re better off having not watched. And indeed, there’s a lot of anime that I wish I’d never watched. This, however, is not one of them. This is a breath of fresh air in a crowded anime landscape. Not only is it a fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes lore, but it is also inherently interesting in how it tackles issues of social inequality as well as making Moriarty, not just a sympathetic villain, but one you can root for and believe in ...

I was so optimistic for Season 3 after I loved Season 1 so much and Season 2 righted the wrongs of A Certain Magical Index. Unfortunately, this season started off with a sixteen episode Daihaseisai arc that had so many continuity errors, it was entirely pointless. And then the second half of the season decided to try and end with a big kaiju fight. What this season tried to do was go big for big sake but it didn’t work, not least because the Daihaseisai arc created too many continuity errors within the canon of A Certain Magical Index to be any form of enjoyable. ...

I was quite hoping that this season would stand out and be the pinnacle of the franchise. Unfortunately, this season was a massive structural mess. The core plot of the season involves Toma stuck in the middle of the unnecessary war against Academy City started by the monotheistic morons at the Vatican. Then it just starts spiralling into nonsense; there’s a whole plot line of a civil war in Academy City waged by the underground groups like ITEM (who should definitely have not gotten a spinoff as they are horribly written villains) centered around Accelerator who then gets dragged into Toma’s magic conflict in Russia, ...

Well, here we are at the Certain spinoff I was dreading. And after five hours of this, I’m still not convinced we needed an Accelerator spinoff because there is no story here. The story in a nutshell is essentially Accelerator gets dragged into a conflict involving necromancers, an evil version of Anti Skill and a sister complex mad scientist which devolves into a rip off of Strike the Blood (namely narcissistic evil organizations expecting everyone to roll over and do whatever they want). Firstly, Accelerator was the worst part of A Certain Magical Index Season 1 and is a complete psychopath so making him the ...

I could cry. Changing things up to make things happen in the real world adjacent a year later is a solid enough idea. Unfortunately, they had to go and introduce a new protagonist who is completely unlikeable because he’s an egotistical narcissist and then there’s a new group of DigiDestined who act as villains and yet somehow are part of the final battle on the heroes team. And I’m really not sure what the idea was behind bringing back the casts of the five previous Digimon series to be a crucial part of the final battle, it wasn’t even an anniversary season, especially as they ...

Coming off the back of Railgun Season 1 and Index Season 2, I was looking forward to this season. This season certainly goes a different route than Railgun Season 1. What made Railgun Season 1 good was that it did self contained episodes, focused on the characters and got to have some fun. Season 2 instead contains two spread out storylines, one of which takes 16 of the 24 episodes. This is the Accelerator storyline which was touched upon in Index Season 1 where it was rushed and felt very out of place within the tone of that show. However, on Railgun Season 2, this ...

Well, here we are after sixty episodes, the end of Strike the Blood. And creating a fifth season consisting of only four episodes, adapting the final volume, feels like a production decision more than anything else rather than actual story decisions because it should’ve been attached to Season 4. It was always going to be an uphill battle after the fourth season was way more baffling than anything. And this final season is similar, but this time, we have more of an annoying villain whose motives are unclear, other than the fact he is an evil dude, and for some reason, we get a space ...

Somehow, this turned out worse than the first season and it all has to do with the fact that it can’t take character development seriously. The main character Taiki is routinely confronted with the fact that he is naive and yet it makes no lasting efforts to change this annoying aspect of the character. Not to mention, Nene struggles with the fact that her little brother is evidently a psychopath and all the main characters want to do is save him. But the most conceited character development storyline is when Kiriha literally murders one of his own Digimon and then experiences no lasting consequences for ...
