Twisted Wonderland is a world of magic with mages, monsters, and a handful of mysteries. The story takes places at Night Raven College, an all-male learning academy for mages, following the MC Yuu who is transported to this strange world after being hit by a carriage.
…It’s your classic Isekai trope, but with it’s own special twist. The black carriage fits nicely with the overall vibe of Twisted Wonderland and makes a lot more sense than a bus would.
As someone who first played the Twisted Wonderland game when it was made available in the US back in 2022, I’m sure you can imagine that

I was quite excited when I found out an anime adaptation had been announced! However, I’ve been disappointed to see that a lot of people who have no prior knowledge of the series have been very harsh on their reviews towards this adaptation. I can understand some concerns new fans have, but they all have straightforward explanations!
The story, art, and design were all done by Yana Toboso, known for being the creator of Black Butler. They are also known for creating a decent handful of BL and other male-centric manga. It is no surprise that TWST also happens to have an all-male cast— it’s just the kind of writing Yana is known for. A lot of people who don’t get into TWST because it’s a Disney work tend to get into it for Yana’s writing, especially those familiar with their stories.
There is also some concern from new fans about the ending, but it’s done the way it is because this is just the first of three confirmed anime adaptations. There’s seven, soon to be eight, total books for the TWST story in full. Whether all of these books will eventually be adapted in anime form is unclear, but keep in mind that this is only the beginning!
As for my personal opinions on it:
I was really worried about the pacing while watching it, but the finale wraps it up really well and I was satisfied with it in the end. Not only did they keep the original Japanese cast from the game, but the English dub also has a very impressive lineup. The animation itself is absolutely stunning— I especially enjoy the use of 3D animation for the blot monsters— and I imagine that they had a pretty high budget considering this is being done in collaboration with Disney. I hope they continue with this quality throughout the rest of the planned adaptations.
Overall, if you’re a fan of Twisted Wonderland then I highly recommend watching this adaptation. It follows the story nicely and is great to see it animated. However if you’re someone who has no experience with the TWST game or manga, I wouldn’t really recommend this for you unless you have some prior knowledge with what it is or genuinely do want to get into it. It can be odd to get into blindly.
