1001 Nights

1001 Nights & Belladonna of Sadness both have unorthodox art style and animation plus a similar soundtrack with little dialogue. Both movies have mild nudity and are hentai-esque, somewhat historical. Both are inspired by works of literature; Arabian Nights & Satanism and Witchcraft.

Sakasama no Patema

Both original movies are rated PG-13 and fall under the Adventure & Sci-Fi genre. I personally find the art style and animation similar. Patema Inverted & Origin: Spirits of the Past both have a female and male protagonist around the same age group. A rescue mission between the protagonists is included in both movies. Both are from seemingly 'different worlds' and work together to defeat a common enemy. In both settings, something 'big' happened to change the current way people live. Both have similar subtle themes of; romance, adventure, environmental, lost civilization and post-apocalyptic.

Both A Letter To Momo and Miyori’s Forest feature a female protagonist, both of which initially have similar personalities. Both protagonists move to rural Japan to live with older relatives after the absence of a parent. While both are G rated supernatural dramas, Midori’s Forest focuses on environmentalism and spirits and A Letter To Momo is centered around inner conflict and youkai. Both protagonists use spirits and youkai to accomplish their goals in these two coming of age movies.

Anyone familiar with Studio Ghibli easily see that Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo was heavily inspired by their films. I feel that the movie it has to most parallels to is Spirited Away as they are both adventure films that take place in a different world, have a female lead, a male lead guide, mysterious creatures and beautiful scenery and soundtrack.
