Even with the indulgence I don't have, there's not much to save this brief epic from the meanders of oblivion. The very mediocre drawing, the strongly clichéd story and the very predictable adventures don't help to enter a universe that is as original but generic as possible. One could think, with this story of a summoner (soul sender) who goes on a pilgrimage to help scattered, frightened hillbillies facing creatures and a devouring miasma, of Final Fantasy, Full Metal Alchemist or even, very vaguely, Attack on Titan. But, reading Alpi the Soul Sender, one doesn't think, madam, one doesn't think.

ORIGINAL REVIEW IN FRENCH BELOW / A REVIEW FOR EACH VOLUME

1) The exposition, simple and clear, is served both by a delicate and refined line, which handles perspectives with a stunning sense of space and a refined narration which reveals the situation, comical and fantastic, in successive layers. Yoko appears at first as a stalker/squatter, living in the homes of others when they are away. With that we understand, by the unexpected meeting of a "leech" comrade, to be understood as "ghost" in fact. From then on a flashback draws in a few poignant touches a daily life which is not really idyllic (a hard-working ...

I wonder if Nihei wasn't more street cred when his stories were opaque and incomprehensible, entirely devoted to a mute architectural stroll (the cult Blame!). Because with Aposimz, we gain in clarity (the line is much brighter and less systematically drawn to baroque buildings à la Druillet, even if I was thinking about the scenario) what we lose in mysterious charm. Vanished, the spell: the triangulation between rebels, empire and underground cult seems above all to be a pretext to align epic battles, somewhere between mechas, sentai superheroes and post-apocalyptic SF (simulator, therefore).

In my memory, although imperfect and aborted, the film seemed more effective to me, getting lost less in superfluous epic developments. Of course, you have to put up with the cheesy 80s music and have the impression of a somewhat fallow work, but the ecological discourse gains in clarity and limpidity - even if, everything will be much more accomplished in Mononoke. Because what we can like here: a lore developed in abundance, a multiplication of characters, clans and intrigues, seemed to me overall a little labored and to drown the discursive fish in a sea of useless details. Still a ...

ORIGINAL REVIEW IN FRENCH BELOW

That a Japanese author takes on post-war American history is a bit jarring and, let's face it, could prove to be a real pain. But through his historical erudition as a film buff, Yamomoto takes us, despite a not always subtle style and narration, into this intimate, aesthetic and political, moral and didactic epic. Interested in both cinema and political history, I could only succumb with attraction to what reveals little-known aspects: at length, the McCarthyist witch hunt in its Hollywood aspect (centralized around the heroic figure of Dalton Trumbo) up to the assassination of JFK attributed - which will contradict ...

With plenty of shonen pitches, the fact that a seinen author shows up with the idea of recreating ancient Rome in a fantasy light seems to be enough. Bestarius is therefore a summary plot in a universe of odds and ends... which, however, can be penetrated, rather skimmed over, without forcing too much. Because with its numerous mythological references (in the choice of surnames and recreated figures) and its angular, careful lines, undoubtedly a little busy, it cuts to the chase. The idea of a world where humans and monsters coexist, the qualifiers often being reversed, tinges these stories of rebellious ...

ORIGINAL REVIEW IN FRENCH BELOW

Merging Harry Potter and One-Punch Man sounds pretty lame on paper. And yet, the first volumes of Mashle, the story of a thick, naive and casual brute, who possesses no magical power in a wizard's world amuses. Thanks to a sense of the well-felt gag, to a diversion now agreed but still effective of the codes of shonen (no laborious learning, invicible enemies: all this is defused by the muscles, nothing but the muscles). Well, the not-so-magical formula is still quite quickly limited and the author has to make his story evolve towards a series of ever more serious fights, to ...

Drawing a manga about Shogi seems somewhat counterintuitive. Just as certain sporting disciplines allow themselves to be seen materially, exhibiting their acts of bravery in the light of day, in such a way that even the philistine can be impressed by a free kick taken from 140m or a series of spectacular dribbles, without mentioning sports of combat which are, basically, at the origin of Nekketsu as we know it. However, Hikaru No Go, under the impeccable leadership of Obata, had shown that it was possible to be successful by focusing on a more intellectual, opaque discipline, the kind ...

Original review written in french below

Beyond the more than generic, nauseating graphics, this manga with its archetypal title instantly seems doomed to the dustbin of history, filled to the brim with immersive video games, cliché RPGs, or warriors with giant swords, prepubescent loligoths and over-the-top magic. -the (crop)top collide in abundance. The relatively unusual multiplication of classes (cooks, fishermen, architects, that sort) and a sort of alchemical balance refer to tutelary figures that are a bit more salient (HxX, FMA) without of course being able to claim to rival them, far from it. (we still leaf through a substitute for .Hack or other Sword Art ...
