This is a banger follow-up to season one. The music is still amazing, the animation is still good, and the storytelling is still great. Best of all, Yotarou is way less annoying. After the first few episodes of season one, I found Yotarou to be unbearable and was thrilled when the flashback took over. Going into this I was concerned with him being an actual main character, but he chilled way out. His over-the-top vibes became way more natural and bearable, and he was a good main character. He still had his moments, but it was nowhere near as
...
bad as it was in season one.
During this season we see relationships grow, people grow, and lessons be learned. The strength of this series is absolutely its storytelling through nuance, it's amazing, I love it. So much happens, there are plot twists, happiness, and sadness, it has it all. As part of this, we see the relationship between Yotarou and Konatsu grow, but it is hampered by the fact that he continues to call her "sis" despite trying to start a relationship with her. This is my biggest complaint of the series, so all things considered that's a pretty small complaint. We are left with a satisfying ending and no questions to be asked. There is one plot point that is left open-ended for the viewer, but that's the point, and it's nothing major.

This story is truly unique, revolving around rakugo, and I love what they do with it. Throughout the series we are presented with long bits of rakugo stories. If you're not one to enjoy the arts this may be a bit annoying, but I personally loved it and thought it added so much to the storytelling that this series presents. The rakugo stories that our characters perform tend to align with how they are feeling/things going on in their real life. The storytelling is truly phenomenal. Assuming the anime did a good job at portraying rakugo, it definitely has me
...
interested in the art, and if I understood Japanese I would absolutely go see a live show. Also, the music in this anime is incredible.
For the show itself, the first few episodes are kind of strange and don't really need to be there. Yotarou, who we are introduced to as our main character, is not a main character at all once Yakumo's flashback begins. This, however, was a bonus for me as Yotarou was incredibly annoying in season one. The flashback, though, is an amazing story. It could have been a stand-alone series itself. While the stuff outside of the flashback sets us up for season two, I think that could have been done in one episode before the flashback and one episode after the flashback.
We also get a huge timeskip at the end, which feels infuriating having only watched season one. The reason for this is because of the build-up before the flashback, we think we will get a story of growth from our recently-released-from-prison main character, but we don't. I saved writing this review for after I watched season two just to see if it was a valid timeskip or not, and I do believe that it is. They just baited us too hard at the beginning to have a timeskip like that, but trust me after watching season two, you'll get over it and understand why they did it.

The main story of this was pretty great. There wasn't a lot of time to get across the whole story, but I think they managed. I do think this would have been better if we had more episodes to really get to know the characters' backgrounds more. We understand all of their backgrounds fully, but just getting more clips from their past to develop stronger emotional stakes within the viewer would make certain things hit harder — the show did still hit real hard though, especially the ending. Also, you're not left with any questions by the end, which is another
...
added bonus.
The animation was good, and the music was CHEF'S KISS. The sound design for this was an absolute banger. They knew exactly what to play and when to play it.
Now, the women in this were eh. Lisa and Five were kinda mid and we see Lisa's mom for like 0.2 seconds. Lisa being the classic helpless, clumsy girl the whole time with like no improvement was a bit annoying but what can you do. And Five's whole plot was, eh. On one hand I get it but on the other hand like, it wasn't really needed; and especially not the lengths she went through and damage she did to get what she wanted.
I also feel bad saying this, but Five's English was terrible. She'd speak English when she was with the other Americans, but she unfortunately had the worst accent of everyone despite being the most important. I obviously don't expect a Japanese voice actor to have perfect English pronunciation or anything, but it made lines that were meant to be hard-hitting into a joke. If the voice actor couldn't get the lines across with the intended power, they should not have had her use English, she doesn't use it half the time anyways. If this paragraph shoos you away from watching it, I'd say don't let that happen; it's only a couple minutes of English throughout the whole series, you can get over it for that short period of time and enjoy everything else.
This sounds like a really complainy review, but these are my *only* complaints. The rest of the show was truly fantastic, I do highly recommend it; it's just hard to tell you good things about it without spoiling anything.

We follow an overarching story with a lot of subplots, each tying into one another and adding to the full story. The first episode of the show throws you right into action. It introduces the world and how alchemy works in fighting circumstances right away. It feels confusing at first, but it's really just an introduction to how things work and the remainder of the series explains everything.
Speaking of explaining everything, this series tends to *tell* you exactly what is going on. While the "show don't tell" premise exists in film, they do a bit of both here, sometimes even showing
...
and then telling you what happened right after via dialogue. I think they utilized it well. There is a lot going on with all of the different plotlines, and sometimes a simple dialogue explanation to keep the viewer up to speed is useful; it never felt intrusive and always fit into dialogue that felt natural.
The characters in the show are well-written with depth to them. I'd like to point out the women especially, there wasn't any fanservice or crazy proportions, and they had true purposes in the series.
While watching the show, you'll likely have many questions and be wondering what will happen next. Thankfully, everything is answered and wrapped up well by the end. The way the story ends doesn't leave you feeling like there could have been something more, they leave you with an actually well-completed story.
This was the first anime that I ever watched, but as I've seen more, my high rating stands. I watched this once in 2023 and again in 2025, and I hate rewatching things, so you know that means it's good.

This series starts off pretty bad, like I would have given it a 4 or 5 bad. The first four episodes are veeery formulaic and it gets old quick. After that, it gets actually good, and then after that it gets actually really good, and then the last couple episodes are fantastic.
I think this series could have benefitted from each episodic section spanning across two episodes instead of one, we kind of don't really get to know anyone. They do a good job at packing everything you need in 24 minutes, but I think they'd do even better if they used 48
...
minutes per arc. Especially considering some of these episodes were mid, they definitely could've cut some stories to build on others.
There is an overall plot that spans across the series and has more depth. Though, it isn't in most episodes and it comes and goes. I feel as though there was a good resolution to everything in this show and I was left with no questions. The last couple episodes are EMOTIONAL man, fire ending. The sound design in this is also AMAZING. The songs in this series are fantastic and they do a great job at playing the right songs at the right time to get you feeling the emotion that they want you to feel.
If this series were like how the last few episodes were throughout the whole thing, it would deserve a much higher rating, unfortunately it falls short in the middle and especially in the beginning. Worth the watch though, I do recommend it; keep in mind it only gets better and better as you're watching.
Side note, the most annoying thing in this show is Faye's boobs. Honestly, are we serious? It takes you right out of it and it bugs me so much. I hate that kind of thing can we please just make women normal humans.

What the synopsis doesn't tell you is that they attend a Catholic school, and religion is a pretty big part in the film. All of the music has religious lyrics, but I will admit their main song is a banger. There are also some definite LGBTQ+ undertones in it. Undertones being true undertones, they really don't play a role in it; and the most obvious hint of it is the post-credits closing scene. The Catholicism and LGBTQ+ undertones do not clash at all, they are their own distinct parts of the film, which I found to be a good thing.
Some drama
...
happens, but overall nothing of huge consequence. There is no wondering what will happen or being scared for the main character. You might feel some sympathy for certain characters at times, but in general it's not tooooo hard-hitting or anything.
I gave it a 7 because there was nothing particularly wrong with it, but also nothing special happened to give it that separating factor.

Honestly, kind of mid and somewhat confusing. We spend the first thirty minutes of the film seeing all the cruel stuff that Ishida and his friends do to Shouko. After this, Ishida is bullied relentlessly by his classmates (for some reason???). Then a bunch of stuff happens, some actually interesting, some not. It leaves me wondering why this film has such a high rating, it felt like it took a long time to go almost nowhere. I think it would've been better if Ueno was cut out after the first interaction with her when they were grown; and it would've
...
been better if we learned more about Shouko's life for her to do what she did towards the end, it would've been more impactful I think.
Ueno's character also really bothered me. She continued to be a bully throughout the whole film yet somehow kept getting invited back to hang out with Shouko and friends???? Why was she even AROUND. And then at the end she mentioned Shimada and Hirose did something I can't say for spoiler reasons... but then WE NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN????? Why even mention it????
I also have no idea if Ishida and Shouko are lovers or not. It felt like it was meant to be, but also had scenes that contradicted it? So I'm left unsure. Vague to avoid spoilers, but there was a scene that Ishida initiated that should have upset Shouko, but didn't; so I feel like they should have left out what Shouko said earlier for that scene to actually hit hard instead of it being like "well why is she happy about this, this could've been a cute confirmation that they are." For those who have seen it, I am referencing Ishida hearing moon and Ishida forming Shouko's hands into a certain sign.

This movie is a whole bunch of nothing. There is ZERO character development and world-building throughout the whole thing. They throw you straight in but never give a backstory. You don't get attached to anyone or anything throughout the whole film, there are no stakes involved for the viewer. It makes for things to be either confusing, boring, empty, or all of the above.
The first actual bit of emotion we get from any character is an hour and fourteen minutes in; and as a viewer, I didn't even care what happened in that scene. It's a shame because this concept
...
is great, but it was totally wasted. It was slow-paced, which was annoying some times and cool other times. I mean, it really shouldn't take over 30 minutes to actually begin the movie. The sound design was great and I really liked some of the cinematography but at other times it was giving "drawing is hard we're gonna just sit on the same frame for a minute to save our hands." And that's a fair thing to do, but not when you could instead be using that time to build characters so your viewers actually care about what's going on. It took a lot of pausing and checking how much time was left in hopes of it ending soon to get through this.
Why this is rated so highly is a mystery to me. I can only think that it's from people who claim it's a masterpiece because they consider it to be a classic, people who watched it around when it was released, and people who like the nudity.

ABSOLUTE CINEMA oh my god. This was incredible. It's a bit confusing at the start, but you get past that. It's a very emotional film, an actual work of art. Be warned — you will shed a tear, or at least get teary eyed.
There really isn't much to say about it except that it's peak and you absolutely have to watch it. A 10/10 is hard to get from me. It has to be a banger story, leave me with 0 questions, and have a satisfying ending. Your Name met all of these qualities, I cannot stress enough
...
how much you have to watch this, wow.

This was a real good series. We follow an interesting concept, with our main character having his right hand taken over by a parasitic alien. These two work together at times but against each other at other times. The show takes us through their relationship, as well as the relationship between Shinichi and his peers and how that changes now that he has his parasitic alien hand, Migi.
The story is unique, very developed, and has a satisfying ending. The only reason it's not higher is because I feel like they could've done a biiiit more with it to make it perfect.
...
It was so close, but not quite there.
An absolute W of a watch though, would highly recommend.
