So this is my first ever review, so I'm sorry if it's kinda bland or short as of right now I don't know where to begin. So I chose something this recent anime season drudged out. Honestly, we have such a subpar anime that the term generic is too generous of a term for it. This piece of garbage that was splattered on my screen actually surprised me. I had heard good things about it from my friend who actually enjoys harems. Don't get me wrong, I love a good harem anime from time to time (who doesn't really). It surprised

me in a way that was, in plain terms stupid. It was so bad I could barely comprehend. The main focus of a harem anime should be the girls, and even then they could BARELY do a decent job at getting the girls to be likable. Enough pre ranting, onto the review!
Story (2)
Honestly, the story is bland and subpar, that calling it dreadful is an understatement. But let's start with the basics. A regular average joe is killed by God, God gives him another chance in a different world that looks like it was pulled right out of a crappy jrpg. The protagonist then learns he has a proficiency in all elements, goes onto becoming an overpowered hero. He then gets a group of girls for some contrived reason or another decides to follow him to the ends of the earth and each fall in love with him because he's essentially an all-powerful being in that world. That's pretty much it. There's actually an 'interesting' subplot, (interesting being used very loosely here as it's because it's better than the rest of the garbage that is called this anime), involving conspiracies and a giant airship but it goes unnoticed. It was instead just hinted at then shoved aside like it didn't matter, all so we can get to see the bland cardboard cutouts that they call its characters do stupid, meaningless garbage.
Character (2)
Talking about bland cardboard cutouts leads me to my second point, the characters. Now the characters in a standard harem should be its bread and butter, that is to say, it should be what the anime would want to be its main selling point. But instead, in Isekai wa Smartphone, we get these cutout characters who can barely convey any emotion besides lust towards the protagonist and shyness. This reminds me of a very poor visual novel. Let's start with the main twins. Of course in typical anime fashion, you have to have an outgoing twin and a shy twin because of course, you do. Next up we have the oriental Japanese samurai girl who's only characteristic is that she has a strong sense of morals. Then we have the princess who falls in love with the protagonist for what I see is like a contractual obligation she must fulfill if she wants her time in the spotlight. Honestly, those 4 are the only main ones you should have the need to focus on because they'll be the 4 you see the most of. I actually kinda enjoyed the fairy character, if she wasn't such an obvious S&M character. She at least had a more interesting power than the rest of them with the power to program objects like one would when programming a computer.
Art (4)
The art is decent, if you play with the word decent to make it mean just average. I really can't state any faults or things the art style does well. I mean I guess it fits the anime? (By being a literal dumpster fire). It's not the worst I've ever seen, but it's far from the best.
Sound (3)
Honestly, the sound engineering was bad, worse than average. The voice actors and actresses sound like they're disinterested like they couldn't care less to be there. They could've breathed life into the anime if they tried a few bit more, but I couldn't get into the characters thanks to their pitiful job.
Enjoyment (4)
I enjoyed the anime in the same sense it's enjoyable to watch someone bang their head against the wall until the wall either gives or their skull is caved in. Sure, it's interesting to look at and you might even get a few chuckles out of it from time to time, and is a great time waster if you have 6 hours you want to regret losing. But I don't think I'd ever watch it again. Nothing really stood out about the anime that I really cared about. The only reason it has a 4 is because when I was younger I would've loved this anime just because it was a harem. But it was a harem with no substance, something I find to be quite disheartening. I hope Japan hasn't forgotten how to make good harem anime's, like Date a Live.
Overall (3)
Honestly, I reached 3 because I threw my numbers into my desktop calculator and out popped 3.something or another. Overall I would've personally given it a 1 or a 2, but at the time of writing it's been a few weeks since I've seen it and I can't remember anything enjoyable about it. I remember there was one part about it that elicited a chuckle from me, so that's something I guess. But I would never watch it again just to get to that one chuckle point. Just save yourself the trouble and go watch Konosuba or something else instead.
I hope you enjoyed my first ever anime review! I might do more when I have time. In the meantime, DON'T watch this anime, unless you're absolutely bored or retarded.
