Yeah...so straight away, the first episode is a stellar 9/10 episode, but everything after that is like a 5. I'd go as far as to say that it hurt more being served that one great episode and then following it up with mediocrity. I wouldn't be writing this review if it were just mid from the beginning.
While the art style did not change, the animation took a noticeable hit---the first episode had clean, fluid and full animations during fight scenes, whereas after that, we would have near-powerpoint level animation. Animations were no longer full. They would often use the trick of only animating the beginning
...
and the end of each action, overrelying on stock slash and explosion effects.
The characters never feel like living, breathing humans; they’re just reskins of classic anime archetypes (His Highness was one bright point, though). Attempts to make the audience connect with the heroes fall flat because there’s nothing beneath the surface, they're cardboard cutouts. As a result, the flashbacks feel misplaced, ham‑fisted efforts to force emotional investment. There’s simply nothing about them that inspires sympathy. They don’t feel like real people; they’re caricatures, and I can’t bring myself to care.
The world-building isn't any better. The show did not make me any more interested to learn more about the demon blight the goddesses or the kingdom, I think largely because it tries to dump all of that information too early. Instead of the plot slowly unfolding as Xylo and the gang travel, the lore is shoved into flashbacks and clunky dialogue with no buildup. New characters are introduced just to keep the show going, chiefly because the core of the show is extremely weak. The MC is one-dimensionally angsty, whilst Teoritta is just praise-gimmick ad-nauseum. Their dynamic gets old fast, and so do the cardboard extras they keep introducing.
The enemies don’t even qualify as one‑dimensional. They have no presence, no aura, and generate zero narrative tension. Despite what the lore suggests about the danger they pose, demon lords die like every other episode. Yes, they kill people here and there, but they're simply not interesting nor threatening at all. They come across like generic RPG mob trash spawned in as disposable fodder for the hero to hack and slash.
It feels as though the author or studio didn’t trust the story enough to believe viewers would stick around if it were properly paced and developed. Instead, they keep dumping information and characters to make each episode feel artificially fresh. What we end up watching is the protagonists moving from checkpoint to checkpoint, which is very trash‑isekai plot in that regard. To be frank, this show only grew as big as it did because of its amazing first episode. Everything that followed it is extremely forgettable, imo.
Do not be baited by the 8.20 rating, shit is ass.

I won't go into too much detail, but I was compelled to write a review since it's simply that entertainingly dogshit. Though I like the genre of shitty fantasy/isekai but this one was too stinky for my taste. I get that the genre is revenge porn of seeing the people who've abandoned you fail miserably, if that's your cup of tea then this is for you.
The S-rank party are caricatures. No effort is made to build them up as an interesting threat. No effort is even spared to make the audience wish for their downfall--it happens instantly yet we're forced to watch them bang
...
their heads against the wall again and again. Somehow these people have been carried by buffs the whole time, and the second they lose it, they can't even kill the weakest of monsters. ??? 'kay I guess.
The MC is no better. He has been excessively brain-damaged that, for 30 chapters, his two states of minds boil down to either being confused or being no-thoughts-head empty. He is so socially dyslexic, so divorced from reality that it doesn't even feel like he's on the same manga. It feels like dialogue goes right through him, which makes me wonder what's the fucking point then.
FMC is...eh. She's there to RTA falling in love with the MC in like 3 chapters, to provide the ":O" reactions when he does cool shit, and ...nothing else really.
That said, there have some interesting hooks laid out, but I have little hope for them amounting to anything substantial. I think the premise of a curse artificer is super cool and I do like some of the cast outside of the party and MC. Ultimately, it reads like a parody that completely missed the mark. The story could've benefited if it just took itself a bit more seriously. Drop the obliviously OP schtick. Drop the S-rank party being irredeemably stupid. They're there precisely for the absurdity, but the author just did not have the capacity to execute on that vision.
TL;DR: If you want an eccentric creating all sorts of op, wacky weapons just read「Bouken ni wa, Buki ga Hitsuyou da! Kodawari Rudy no Kajiyagurashi」instead.

On the Movements of the Earth breaks away from the typical anime storytelling beat, ambitiously choosing to tell a grander story over multiple years. Where others may fumble however, Orb succeeds in telling a moving and grandiose story. It does a good job connecting each arc with each other through its central theme of Heliocentrism, though ironically, I would not call it the star of the show. What the author did best were their characters---captivatingly compelling with a depth I wish was more common in anime. Getting the audience to care about your MC is a monumental task on its own, let alone four different
...
MCs over the course of 25 episodes. Yet at the end of each of their arcs, I found myself deeply emotional every time. Frankly speaking, the author could have replaced Heliocentrism with X topic of choice, and it would still work.
The opening and ending themes by Sakanaction and Yorushika were stellar as well. Even on a binge, I didn't neglect to listen to each in its entirety. The studio's decision to alter details in the opening each arc was genius, keep an eye out if you haven't watched it yet!
In terms of art and cinematography, they pulled no punches in conveying the wondrousness of the night sky. I found myself sharing the characters' awe and love for the cosmos (and the art department for putting that extra effort every time). The art team/mangaka also did a wonderful job with the architecture. Not familiar with Polish period architecture, but it wasn't your generic fantasy European city copy-and-paste. It had deliberate thought behind it and it's greatly appreciated. Character design is simple yet memorable, it's relatively tame in terms of anime, with realistic hairstyles and non-exaggerated features. Save for Badeni, my goat.
I won't put too much stock on the animation as that is not the focal point of the show, though it definitely did not drag down the quality of the show. The fights, limited as they were, were decent and did not drag for too long. Gore and torture are present, but not to the point that its gratuitous. Choreography is nothing to write home about.
If I had to nitpick a fault, it would be of a plot point in arc 4. I understand what the author was trying to go for, and to a lot of people it made sense. However, I felt like unnecessary confusion in favor of subverting expectations and forcing this contrast between 1 and 2 (this will make more sense with context.). I do not think creating 2 was necessary to draw this contrast and could have been easily done with a completely separate character. There are also some silly deaths that derail the flow/tone of some scenes, but these are relatively minor problems.
Ultimately, the story it tells is deeply human. Do not mistake it as just a fictional retelling of the discovery of Heliocentrism. It conveys how we are inspired by the awesomeness of the world around us, how we interpret that world through science and religion, and how these experiences coalesce into convictions. At the same time, it also shows the ugliness--the atrocities committed borne out of these convictions and beliefs, and the sacrifices made in service of something greater. I feel incredibly fortunate to have watched this series; to find an anime like Orb, is truly thaumazein. I hope you'll give it a watch!
If I had to give a rating:
Story: 8/10
Characters: 10/10
Music: 9/10
Art: 9/10
Animation: 6/10

I don't watch much anime these days, mainly because I'd say I've watched all there is to see in anime. 90% of what you see out there are regurgitated plots with reskinned cast that behave almost exactly the same, and sound almost exactly the same. Amidst that, I found Ousama Ranking as something that stood out, something different. Though Bojji's woes are often found in shounen-- a kid with big dreams with no power to back it up; I was compelled to root for Bojji. Something I haven't felt in a long time. Whether it's his innocence or simply cuteness, I can't say, but needless
...
to say the beginning parts of the series hooked me to the show immediately. I was drawn in by this colorful world, and whatever this ranking of kings was, I grew fond of almost every character, and I just found myself binging the show. Precisely due to this is why I just find it so disappointing, so unforgivable what they did with an otherwise perfect hook to a story.
As I continued to watch the show, the good parts of it are few and far between. At the very least, in the very beginning, I had the perception that the characters were very layered and had complex motives and emotions. We see this in Bojji's struggles, Kage's development, Doman's feelings towards Bojji, Hiling's love for Bojji, and even Daida's ambition to be a strong king. I also have to admire the art style, it really does bring such life and expressiveness to the world and its people that you don't often see in anime nowadays. But my praises end there.
I believe Ousama Ranking fell off when Bojji fell off that tower. For real. Not only did the show actually started becoming worse after that episode, but it began a trend of saving characters when they should've died.
The show is bogged down by excessive uses of flashbacks to explain motives; something that becomes near-necessary when the only plot-twist is that of betrayal. It also suffers from ironically, rushing plot points while having such slow scenes. With episodes bogged down by 5 minute long-flashbacks/recaps at the start, slow training/slice of life scenes, long scenes of just running/inconsequential dialogue, the show struggles to pace itself to the upcoming climax. In an episode, we might see Bojji training/chilling, a flashback of Apeas, Miranjo going into the underworld and back, and Hiling in exile, and in the next episode, Bojji is running back home, the criminals are amok, and Hiling is back. There's simply no time for these plot threads to develop and converge naturally. King Bosse advices many of his knights to bide their time and do certain things when the time was right. I would be inclined to believe that was supposed to be a climactic battle that the show would be leading up to, where answers will be given, and plot threads are resolved. Instead we see Doman in exile and back in just a couple of episodes.
The show is inconsequential, and no one truly dies, and no one is truly bad. Bosse dies King Baratheon style, gets revived. Bebin dies, survives. Daida's body is taken over by Bosse, still alive inside dark dimension. Bojji thrown off a chasm, survives on a ledge. Anyone getting hurt near Hiling? Believe it or not, survives. Even Miranjo who's orchestrated all these atrocities, is redeemed at the end, and we're supposed to sympathize with her.
What could've been an incredibly immersive world, filled with colorful and engaging characters was ruined by a mediocre "tragic" witch scheming plot that the show could've done without. At least the side characters are fun and Boy by King Gnu slaps.
