Nukitashi is a comedy anime first and foremost. It is NOT a hentai, although it is based on an eroge. The premise is an island where public premarital sex is mandatory. Yes, it's a reverse Shimoneta. But let's delve deeper.
The primary conflict of the series is a bit hard to understand at first. Our MC is a very perverted guy - you would think he would enjoy the island's policies, but in actuality he detests them and wants to tear them down. He has personal hangups due to his past, and also is a believer in No Love No Sex, which becomes the group's
...
mantra. He likes dirty sex - but only when there's an emotional component. And Jun is very compassionate, sometimes to a fault, like in the infiltration arc, where he begins to question his beliefs and if his goals are really "right" for the inhabitants of Seiran island.
It seems (though like a lot of things in nukitashi, is muddy) that the lewd sex law discourages things like masturbation, abstaining, and alternative sexualities like lesbianism. It also strangely has an anti loli law or something? But when exactly the age of consent becomes legal, is not really explained or explored, beyond our favorite "not a loli" Misaki. I find this is perhaps nukitashi's worst quality, in that, due to its truncated runtime, it really can't explore too many ideas. For example, there's a girl who is afraid to let people see her naked because she's a bit chubby. After her initial episode and friendship with Misaki, she completely falls off the radar. I'm sure in the Vn she has an entire route and lots of dialogue.
It took me a few episodes to really "get" the conflict, but once I did, I understood what the series was going for. Jun is a very perverted guy, but he also believes highly in personal freedom and choice, and is very anti authority. He wants people to make decisions for themselves, not be forced to have sex by some law. You really only hear this philosophy in the final episode.
Unfortunately, Nukitashi fumbles by having way too many vague ideas of how the perverted law works, how its enforced, its parameters, and what constitutes illegal behavior and not. The philosophies of its characters can feel a bit vague too. Some people are captured and forced to be deflowered, others are given near free reign to not have sex or have it be suspected they're not having sex. Like, is sex mandatory every day? A few times a week? If you are the type to care about plot holes or worldbuilding vagueness, I can see you struggling with buying into nukitashi's absurdist sexual premise. I am not the type to nitpick a cartoon's realism, but even I had to sit back a few times and go, wait, can these characters just do/say that?
Now, this show's biggest strength is its perverted comedy. There are tons and tons of sexual gags, with lots of wordplay and puns, vibrators used as weapons, people having public sex during dialogue scenes - all of it is hilarious and animated well. I wish there were more sakuga fight scenes, but what we do get is fun to watch. I do find issue with how incosistent certain words are censored - i imagine it has to do with the tv stations, but its always jarring. Sometimes words like pussy and dick are censored, sometimes they aren't. It can feel a bit random when you are watching a crowd of people having sex, uncensored, but I digress.
Ultimately, I do think nukitashi does well in preaching the values of lewd behavior and sex while showing the pitfalls of a life dedicated only to lewd behavior. Have sex, but have passion too. Find love. Get laid. Masturbate. Just don't become a soldier for an authoritarian government, I guess.
Would I recommend nukitashi? Yeah, if you like over the top sex comedies like shimoneta or prison school. But it seems like this is just a truncated version of the eroge, mostly one route, so play the eroge too, which probably expands on all of these concepts way, way more, like 40 hours more.
As an advertisement, Nukitashi got me to want to play the eroge to get the full actual story, so as an advertisement, I guess it worked.
Also, it seems the ending is sequelbait? I know there's a full Nukitashi 2. OVAs are rumored to be coming when the BDs release, which i imagine will sell like gangbusters.

As someone who loves yuri but is frequently frustrated by slow burn stories that go nowhere or only vaguely gesture toward serious romance, this show feels like a godsend. There are THREE incredibly memorable bath scenes throughout the twelve episodes, which are all VERY steamy! and lots of kissing! what a concept! In fact, this show is so forward and its characters so blatantly horny and boundary crossing at times, I would actually warn people who don't like that kind of thing away from this show, because wow are these girls so explicit about what they want!
Watanare is a romcom masterclass that isn't even really
...
about romance, per se, it's about examining the line between friends and lovers, a really clever premise, marketing tactic and hook that the series continues to play with throughout its run. Is it better to have a friend or a lover? How does one make the distinction between these categories? When dealing with multiple suitors, how does one discern between such feelings? It's hard, and not always clear, and that's what this show seeks to answer.
A harem yuri at its core, these is no shortage of cute girls doing cute things in cute situations. If you love girls with "could pounce on you at any moment" energy, this is absolutely your show. My favorites are Mai and Satsuki, but Ajisai is also great if you are into the "perfect big sister" dynamic - especially its little twist of her actually wanting to be a little sister. Very funny. As an exploration of lesbian identity, it's nice to see the characters very nonchalant about it all, especially the side characters who love to tease and ship the girls together. There is no endless pontificating about "is it wrong to love another girl?" - and if they do come up they are very quickly dealt with.
Also, there are basically no men in this show, barring a few very limited side characters. Yuritopia indeed.
The animation, I would say, gets a 9/10, with tons of hilarious cartoony asides, quick gags, text gags, and ridiculous expressions, largely driven by our socially inept femc, who is almost in a constant state of being flustered, which never fails to crack me up. The only thing I can dock for is there are quite a few still frames, but the rest of the animation is so beautiful and kinetic that I can largely forgive these small instances.
I have heard some people bemoan that this series is "NTR", and i have to say, as a fan of NTR stories, what are you smoking? Relationship conflict is not NTR. There is little in the way of any humiliation element in the frisky pacing of the show, what is essentially three arcs covering the three girls (i guess they didn't care about the loli girl Kaho, who is rarely in the show. hopefully season 2 comes soon). While there ARE relationship tensions and things that could be considered "cheating" - Renako and Mai are not officially officially dating. Mai even encourages Renako to go out and explore things as she feels Mai will ultimately be chosen in the end. She doesn't do that for NTR reasons. Perhaps the later volumes of the LN and manga DO become NTR, but this show is way, way more of a harem/polyamory show than it is anything NTR. don't listen to people who say that.
ultimately, i think this show highly raises the bar for any and all yuri shows and media which come after it. I was even pleasantly surprised with how much I ended up enjoying it.

When it comes to mecha parodies, Nadesico is one of the first that comes to mind. Its 90s cel style of animation, combined with its incredibly effective meta elements, makes it an easy sell.
Nadesico hinges on a strong knowledge of mecha tropes. I would not recommend it to those who have not seen some level of mecha anime. While its serious elements do enough to carry a mostly full story, the mile a minute jokes, jests, puns and references will probably deter any newcomers to the genre.
Tone is also a potential deterrent. If you have issues with constant tone shifts, this show plays
...
jumprope between genuine serious drama and silly shenanigans.
The show within a show, a super robot anime inside what is almost a real robot anime, was one of this show's highlights. Characters are fans of robot anime and constantly reference it, and it even comes to play into the plot more in the second half.
For me, the highlight characters were Ruri and Yurika. Unfortunately, the other characters were a bit truncated, mostly due to lack of runtime. There are a few entries more in the Nadesico series. A largely reviled movie which I havent seen yet, and some video game sequels, untranslated, which I also haven't played.
If you're looking for a neat and complete ending, this show doesn't have it. But by the end, you will feel like you accomplished something and been on a great journey. For fans of mecha looking for a comedy, I recommend nadesico and its crew of idiots.

Is Iczer One revolutionary? Is it a highly influential classic? Is it perfectly paced, with a tight story? Is it a highly original story? The answer to all of these is probably no. However—Iczer One is fun. It's pure 80s schlock, with fluid animation impressive for the time and makes for a decent enough sci fi movie. It is a kitchen sink of tropes where at times you barely remember its supposed to kind of be a mecha anime.
The primary draws of Iczer One are its overt yuri/lesbian content and its strangely lovecraftian creatures which contrast with what otherwise looks like a standard high

school sci fi romp. The wction is brutal and hopeless - i dont think the sky is ever not dark past like the 20 minute mark.
I cant recommend to everyone, but Iczer One is enjoyable enough to be a forgotten classic worth remembering.

What Mezzo DSA loses in budget and animation consistency, it gains in sheer style and attitude. This punkish sequel to the incredible Mezzoforte is a silly, ridiculous romp of a procedural which rarely if ever takes itself the least bit seriously. The pace is wonky, the characters are insane, the setting is retro sci fi with fantastical elements, the physics are nonexistent, and the sex and fanservice is constant, but something about Mezzo DSA just hits all the right places. they TRULY do not make em like this anymore. if this got a season 2, it couldve truly hit a stride. here's to hoping umetsu
