Fragtime

Fragtime is a short and simple anime movie with deep characters. This film's main focus is its characters. If you are here for the supernatural elements or spectacular animation, you might have to lower your expectations, not saying that it's bad or anything. One main thing that kept this movie from reaching its full potential was its length: some parts felt a bit rushed, some could have been a bit longer to let us connected/followed the characters and story better. As a fan of the drama and Shoujo-Ai genres, it's a pretty good film to watch. Solid 7/10.

Here's my breakdown in details:

Story 6/10:
The story ... is simple, a popular girl and a socially awkward girl with time-stopping ability. The main focus of the movie isn't the story. It only uses the supernatural element on a superficial level to move the story forward, without really diving into it.

Characters 8.5/10:
As mentioned in the aforementioned paragraphs, the movie excels in its characters. I liked the depth of the main cast, the drama works well thanks to that. Yes, on paper, the characters sound generic, however, it doesn't get boring as the story progress. I love seeing how it progressed.

Development 8.75/10:
Another strong suit is the development. Our characters don't stay the same from the start to finish. It felt so nice seeing how our characters turning into a different person at the end, showing that what they experience has changed how they used to be, in a good way.

Atmosphere 7/10:
Nothing special to be said about the atmosphere of the show, it's just decent. Typically of what you would expect from a high school theme. Though, the school element has quite a presence in the overall story build up.

Storytelling 5/10:
My biggest issue about the film is the storytelling elements. The film's length is only 1 hour so it's to expected giving its duration. There are pacing issues: some part of the story could have been fleshed out more, like Moritani's powers, or by giving more screen time to our main cast to show how their relationship progresses (GL element).
As for the OST, the music was nice though not too memorable. Nonetheless, it does its job of enhancing emotions of certain scenes in the movie

Animation 8/10:
A simple yet beautiful animation. The studio does well to animate the story, nice art style.

Personal Enjoyment 7/10:
A solid 7/10 not a bad show, just that it was simply too short for me to get attached to the characters. The story was moving rather too fast for my likings. Other than that, the movie was overall an enjoyable experience, love the development throughout the story and the drama elements is well executed.

This film is very fetishistic and autistic. You should know that going in, before you get started. It has a very distinct idea of both what life and anime is like, and goes in extremely hard in that deeply unique concept, for better or worse.

But you're reading the review, so the question is: should you watch this? Is this good?

I won't say it's bad. But it's certainly nothing memorable. The key issue here is that the entire premise of this story, while fine on its own, does not roll itself into something complete by the end. Because it's extremely insistent in its exploration of ... ideas (peeping toms, obsessive lovers, inability to socialize normally, and general neurodivergency), you have to really resonate with one or more of those ideas to begin to resonate with the film. And if you resonate with none of these concepts, or only one of them, then you might not like this film.

This is all on top of the fact that the film is only 60 minutes long. With such a short runtime, it really has to execute in some fashion to maintain itself. And I think it does a solid job in that regard; the animation and general story is fine as it is. But it comes back to that lack of memory; this film doesn't do anything special, it doesn't stand out. It's just an emotional romp. And if that's all you want, then good for you. But if you're expecting something more than just a jaunt of upskirting, minimal yuri relationships, and weird sci-fi, you're digging too deep on this one.

i made an account to share how much i hate this movie. nothing is explained, the characters are incredibly shallow and there is literally no substance.. none of the actions that these characters take actually have any motivation, and the relationship between the two girls is literally just gross fanservice. i came into this hoping for a cute gl story and went out of it regretting that i wasted my time watching this.

why does she have this power and why does it disappear? not explained, but i guess it disappears because she "loves"/"likes" murakami which is also not really explained because apparently murakami has been ... putting on a fake personality all along, so, how does she fall in love with someone she never really knew? yes, she can think she loves her, but her powers going away because of a shallow feeling of affection experienced by mc is kind of crazy! because, again, how do these powers work then?

not explained! not explained why murakami apparently liked moritani, whose only personality trait was being shy, when murakami was apparently a people pleaser with no likes or dislikes... does she like mc because of how she doesn't care about those things? there's a dozen other people like that, then! why does she like moritani, specifically? their relationship boring and exclusively fanservice with no actual substance to it. to top it off, murakami just flashes moritani for funsies. a lot! the entire reason they even meet is because moritani is being incredibly creepy and lifting up murakami's skirt to see her panties, which truly is one of the meet-cute premises of all time. truly. and also the motivation for WHY moritani has the urge to do this in the first place is never explained.. so i guess she's just a pervert at heart?

PLUS!! moritani and murakami never even knew each other beyond being classmates before, so why they suddenly have this "connection" is unclear?? and why does moritani's power suddenly exclude murakami when it presumably didn't before??? again, it's never explained! so the most interesting part, the premise, is wasted and never explored or explained, but you do get to see like a billion panty shots, so i guess that makes up for it, right? cinema! absolute cinema!
