Mixed feelings this time. I really don't Cybelle. She definitely is my least favorite kind of character. She's purely dislikable and doesn't have enough going on. She's not badly written persay, insane groupies exist, people do get hurt like Tues did and this is a potential way that could occur. But, she's been working as a plot device. An insane 'fan' who potentially likes Tuesday, who wants to work with her, and manipulates her. For some counterexamples, we have characters like Pyotr who seems egocentric and bombastic but deep down can appreciate others music and celebrates with them, will say kind words and act kind. It's a way of subverting my expectations and it makes me think his speech was genuine. He's being himself no matter who tells him not to, it may seem fake or annoying, but I think he's a good and real person. Ertegun may be a classical narcissist, but I've started to find his narcissism hilarious, 'the Ertegun inside of me', 'I'm the only one that can shine like me', and just the fact that to stall for time they had Ertegun talk about himself, it's genius! On top of that, sure he can shoot down people without giving them a chance, but he's been said to be earnest, to not let those personal feelings get in the way. These seemingly rather one dimensional characters work for me, but Cybelle so far hasn't had enough focus on her side which makes sense narratively but I find it uninteresting to make someone so unlikable work like she has. I may be being unfair. I suppose how she pans out as an antagonist will change my mind and these kinds of stories often don't leave characters one dimensional.
I like how this episode showed Angela may be tough but she does truly want to win honestly. She wants to prove her worth without cheating. Mama may not be the type to sabotage either but we don't fully know yet, Angela did suspect her. On top of the introspection we saw from Angela, it's nice to see that side of her too. Further, Katie was sniffing Angela's lipstick!!! We knew she was a mega fan but maybe she has a crush on Angela too. If that's the case, it makes this moment where Angela brashly accused Katie all the more interesting for it setup for a moment where Angela apologizes to Katie and they get closer!
Carole's words to her parents were powerful. She came from earth as a refugee, abandoned and never meeting them. What more do you have to say than "I'm here". You are standing and breathing, you made it, and you're still out there. Likewise, Tuesday's line about having a home but not having anyone waiting for you was strong too. A home is where you belong, you can very well not 'feel at home' at home. This also led to Tuesday being found from the television and picked up quite brutally, one even struck Carole down. Luckily, I think having Gus, who would worm his way into the camera room to find whoever hurt Tuesday, Carole who is a fighter and loves Tues, and the brains of Roddy who found the real perpetrator means they have a good army for getting Tuesday back. Not even mentioning the ally at her home, her brother.
The casual drift between Carole and Tuesday is potentially interesting. Just like with the Katie misunderstanding, it seems the conflict will drive them closer. We felt a noticeable dip in their synergy recently and with Tuesday not even telling them who did this to her and probably feeling like it was her fault, Carole spoke up about it.. Tuesday has to value herself enough to not care about a psychotic person like Cybelle, she can't blame herself, she has to speak up, say no outright, tell people what Cybelle did, she can't just move along and only act strong when it comes to their music.. So, perhaps Carole acted on a little futility with her words, as were they just about her own success as they were about Tuesday.. which is a shame because Tuesday showed a lot of strength by coming out as herself to be strong with Carole. I don't feel the relationship of the duo drifting was narratively satisfying... I think this largely has to do with it not getting outright focus, much like real life relationships are which is the interesting part, but also it centering around Cybelle who's worked thus far as a dislikable plot device to cause conflict and tension, and build relationships through it. Cybelle's role seems to make everything feel a little dirty and unearned. |
