Well, they got the festival theme episode out of the way early this season.

Looks like there's some dark moments from flashbacks. And ever forget that Shiori is far normal in this show despite her different moods. I do find her chemistry with Hinako to be strangely amusing though.

Already a festival episode? That was quick. Anyway, they are always one of my favorite episodes since they are so wholesome.

Shiori and Hinako were so sweet together again. :3

Those flashbacks were a bit scary. Poor Hinako. She has endured so much.

And poor Miko as well. I'm sure Hinako hurt her feelings.

Quite a surprising cliffhanger btw. Miko can also see those yokai? :o

"I want you to be happy so i can eat you/I want to be happy so i can die faster"

Such a beautifully twisted relationship, I wonder how Miko will fit in all this seeing that she is not exactly just an ordinary girl.

I don't know whether to take this anime as a comedy or seriously. For now I don't like Shiori at all, and I think there is something more behind Miko's character, I think they have left clues that he is also a yokai and speaking of hinako, not telling miko that she had gone to the festival seems like a stab to me, always have to put the truth first if you really love a friend. very sad Hinako's past, but if I'm honest of the three characters, the one I like the most is Miko so far

Overhead views of the city must be pretty during the festival. Terrifyingly kind lol. But that matches Shiori's personality perfectly. Burning and drowning are the worst ways to die in. The irony of having her wish granted only if she lived happy sure is ironic. I can totally see Miko being the jealous type. Still the insight into how their bond started was nice. Going by that final scene seems that Miko like her namesake has powers of her own.

Peak yuri festival episode is the perfect way to spend my birthday. This was an emotional roller coaster, on one hand it was really nice to see Hinako get out the house and do things kids her age should be doing, on the other hand, learning her backstory and getting some of my theories confirmed was hard to hear. Forget the romance, I just want Hinako to be happy 🥹

I figured Hinako would have a bout of PTSD at the festival, but wow that was dark. “I don’t think I’m going to get any better than I am now.” It really hurts me how truly depressed and defeated Hinako sounded here. Depression is so sad. You can literally hear her being torn between wanting to live on and honor her family and wanting to just be free of all the pain she’s been in for all these years. It’s like she doesn’t want to betray their memory, but she’s suffering so much and until this week, only had Miko to turn to and even then she didn’t wanna burden her too much. It’s the suffering in silence Hinako and so many others with depression experience that’s really hard to see.

Looks like I was spot on with my theory that Hinako’s family died because of the water, but man that is beyond traumatising to watch your family sink in a car like that completely powerless to help. The fact she’s even still around with us is a testament to Hinako strength because so many other people would’ve committed suicide by now.

Covered in blood and promising not to let anyone else eat Hinako.. oh how I love lesbians lol. Even though Shiori’s eyes represent the ocean that claimed Hinako’s family, her actions are kind and liberating. It’s almost like saying yea your parents died in the ocean, but it’s not an inherently evil thing. It can be kind and nurturing as well.

Nooo, not Miko finding out Shiori and Hinako went to the fireworks together :/ poor thing, this was my worst fear. She’s obviously got a crush on Hinako and been trying to get her to do stuff like that forever so to see someone just show up and be able to 😢 As if that weren’t bad enough though, she can spirits as well?? What a cliffhanger

Studio Lings doing rather well so far with Watatabe; another great quality episode. Clearly they've put a lot of effort into this, compared to what some shows sadly get.

The atmosphere continues to be fantastic and I love the way they're capturing Hinako and Shiori's characters so far. Especially Shiori, she comes across as both kind and patient but also a beautiful cruel monster at same time. Some of that credit should definitely go towards the Seiyuu as well. Excited to see how they handle things now that Miko is also coming into the proverbial picture.

Hinako's past was really tragic, you'll think she was lucky that she survived, but for her who lost everything– just breathing everyday is already suffocating. And now we know the reason why Hinako couldn't just commit suicide, she's carrying the burden of living, for herself and for her dead family.

Such a crazy and twisted relationship Hinako and Shiori has, Shiori helping Hinako to live and enjoy her life to the fullest and by the end both of them will get their reward, Shiori with her 'delicious food' and Hinako with her wish of death. Now how will Miko join into this whole thing?

The way Shiori describes how bad she wants to eat Hinako is disturbing but with the context of Yuri and 'comedy', I just say "that's hot". lol

Miko can see those Yokai too! Now that you think about it, Hinako not being attacked by those yokai all this time could possibly be because of Miko, as she's always been by her side. Now how will Shiori handle this–

It's definitely interesting though, really can't wait to see where this is going. Definitely feels like one where I have to keep reading the manga afterwards.

"You want to try to live happier, so that you can die.." what a predicament Hinako is in 😭😭💔

This episode makes it even clearer that somewhere in her cold heart Shiori does want Hinako to lead a happier life and she wants to protect her from other yokai that comes after her. That eating her when she becomes tastier part might be a lie and even if it isn't I'm gonna believe that it's a lie.

That was such a tragic accident that killed Hinako's parents sparing only her. It shouldn't happen to anyone..🥺🥺💔💔
Her dead fish eyes and depressed voice really makes you feel the character's pain. Hats off to Ueda Reina for the impeccable voice acting.

Poor Miko feeling betrayed..and she came at the worst possible time witnessing Shiori slaughter a sea monster. I hope Shiori doesn't finish her off right away.

Crunchyroll fucked something up bad with their system this fall season, there were so many untranslated kanji in this episode, it was pretty annoying but at least the scenes weren’t hurt much by it, doesn’t make me feel much better about it tho lol. The episode itself was good tho, we got to find out what exactly happened to Hinako’s family, and yeah no wonder this girl is so haunted by it, being forced to watch your family be taken by the ocean before your eyes and not being able to do anything about it, doesn’t get more traumatic than that.

However, Shiori is helping Hinako in her own twisted way, which is very interesting because I’m not sure if I would feel better knowing that I’d be eaten once I’m happy, because once Hinako is happy, wouldn’t she not want to die anymore? I guess that’s what makes this so intriguing lol. A little bit about Miko tho, Hinako shouldn’t have lied to her because she absolutely saw her with Shiori at the festival, I get why Hinako did it but that doesn’t make it a good choice, but I did like those yandere eyes from Miko so I hope this makes her do something untoward. And then at the very end Miko happened upon Shiori slaying a youkai, I’d be worried but I’m thinking Miko might just be a youkai too, I mean Shiori did just bring up the question of how Hinako has made it this far, and that was right after Hinako talked about her long friendship with Miko, seems too perfectly timed to not be true lol.

@GeneralHawk It's definitely lovely, as is the overall aesthetic.

But it's kinda like how I can't bring myself to watch Spy x Family but absolutely love the manga- there are elements of the voice work and pacing that just feel off to me. In SxF it's a case of the absurdity trending too much into the cringe in animation, for this it's a case of watching it and feeling like struggling step by by through a waste-deep pool of treacle.

A quick look at the manga suggests it's going to be a great read.

Hinako and Shiori have a heart-to-heart, and now they have a secret to keep...

I'm not sure how I feel about the cruelty of Shiori building Hinako's happiness up, and just when she is happy enough, Shiori eating her. It benefits Shiori for sure, but for Hinako, she's going to have endure a lot. It's a twisted relationship for sure, and it's interesting to see. I'm not glad that Hinako didn't tell Miko about her going to the festival with Shiori, because that's only going to open up another can of worms going forward. With the ending of the episode as well, I do wonder if there's more to Miko's character than what we have seen so far.

@Mirality Frankly with the sheer trauma, I feel like there's going to be a twist where it may have been manufactured in some way, though it's a long shot in terms of how the story could change things for the characterization and dynamics to still work while the status quo is upended in some way

Weekly appreciation of the opening song right here.

This was a pretty simple episode nothing too major happened, kinda served to clear the air between Hina and Shiori and I mean yeah it gave lore behind Hina but come on everyone knew what happened with like the 1000 hints they dropped in the first 2 episodes. Seems like Hina has a scar on her side though from the accident, plus it actually did add some depth to her. Like I assumed she was just scared to die but turns out she's holding the burden of her family wanting her to live which is why she still lives. So she uses an anomaly like Shiori to fulfil her wish.

As for Miko aka the girl I keep calling Hinako for some reason, she's still kinda a enigma she has like a unsettling creepy vibe behind her. Idk I can't help but feel like she has some kind of deeper motive I mean perhaps im just saying this since everything seems to wanna kill Hina. Idk how to explain it but I'll be very surprised if she just turns out to be a yandere type in love with Hinako. She looked surprised at the end so im gonna assume she could see the minor yokai that Shiori killed.

Funnily enough right now to put this show in simple terms. Shiori is a level 100 boss guarding a treasure while a ton of level 5 hunters try beat her that's in simple terms what the anime is.

Jokes aside this show has a really strong trio of girls and a really good plot however its massively walking on eggshells. I feel like the slightest slipup in writing could honestly ruin the show or at least the characters. Which honestly I feel like if they lean to heavy into the girls love aspect it might kill it. At least I don't want Shiori to have some random change of heart at some point later and not want to eat her. Right now that would just feel weird.

But I mean so far their handling everything amazingly, I really so hope they keep leaning into the horror aspect as a pose to the romance.

Great episode generally, still probably the best thing airing this season while that's not setting the bar high since this seasons kinda dull its still better than a lot of shows from older seasons this year and I mean its far FAR better than the last girls love that aired Watanare. in my opinion at least, as in the show in general not the girls love aspect since right now thats kinda non-existent in this anime

One other point I'll throw in is this show could get really boring if it just turns into Shiori one shotting every single Yokai that tries eating Hina, so I really hope they introduce another Yokai or character or something to balance the scales

@Aleksu Thats actually a good point you brought up about Hinako not being attacked by any Yokai prior to Shiori showing up. Plus the first time she got attacked in the show was when Miko had to leave her. So she probably had been acting like a guardian angel without Hina knowing

This anime has been trash so far, so I think I’m going to drop it. After three episodes, you could honestly say that nothing has happened. The protagonist only just now bothered to reveal her past trauma, and Shiori is clearly meant to be a captivating, magnetic character, but she just comes off as annoying and dull. The writing is practically nonexistent, the character design is uninspired, and the production value is seriously low. I have no idea how it has the ratings it does. Someone help me understand, please.

Poor Miko got cucked. She's got them Yandere eyes now and she can even see the Yokai. Is this the power of yandere eyes?

Anyways though Miko really has done a lot for Hinako by just acting normal and being there with her. Besides Hinako not being able to kill herself because of her families last words I feel Miko being there for Hinako was probably a big reason she was able to live till now.

meh survivor's guilt, that's so unrelatable, I was right, this mc is complex for the sake of being complex to the point even the monster that is Shiori is more logical than her

and she's a terrible friend

I'm betting Miko is also a monster like Shiori and doing the same thing wanting Hinako to be more delectable and also clearing up other yokais that's why she's always absent, it makes sense considering how surprise Shiori that Hinako survived this long

she could also be a shrine maiden hence the name Miko, so she'll be like the opposite of Shiori but I think it'll be more interesting if she's a yokai like Shiori

This was a masterclass of an episode when it comes to tone and dialogue-use. Was gripped from beginning to end and they didn't even have to do anything far out there to keep me invested. Whatever yearly awards they have for seiyuus, just give them all to Reina Ueda this time around. As a manga-reader, the way she's bringing Hinako to life is an all-time great performance.

So Miko did end up seeing Hinako at the festival and neither one has brought up the fact that Hinako ended up going with Shiori but I'm sure it will come up later at some point. Regarding the cliffhanger, it looks like Miko can also see yokai so that makes me wonder if she's a monster like Shiori or simply someone unique that can both see them and kill them to protect Hinako, interesting twist there.

I think it's very funny that she is trying to get Hinako to be healthier mentally. She says it is to make her more delicious, but what's going to happen is: Hinako is not going to get better, so she is going to not taste the greatest, or she is getting happier, AND if she is happy she won't want to get killed by the mermaid. I think the latter is going to happen and we will see if this is indeed a tragic story, or the mermaid will pity her and let her go.

That lingering, depressing atmosphere in this anime is everything

But i have already read comments like "the narrative in this anime is too boring" "the plot develops too slowly" and other complete nonsense, because plot here is quite normal its just this slow pace is the unique feature of this anime (i dont know about the manga, but its true for the anime).

So fans of Jujutsu Kaisen and other similar shit certainly wont enjoy this anime - there are no explosions and fights every minute, the characters dont run around and scream everywhere like idiots. This anime focuses on conversations and relationships so if you dont like that just pass by.

And now about episode itself: Hinako's past finally revealed, about the accident. And it turns out that the sea plays a big role.
And there was even showed her scars, for a little moment. I think scars in anime are beautiful, thats my fetish.

Well, so Hinako decided to enjoy her life to achieve nest goals:
1. keep her promise to her parents
2. die

Good try but will it work since she was depressed for years?

Miko is very mysterious.
I think she has some kind of secret.
Especially since she saw a monster at the end - does that mean she can see them?

Anyway, for now Miko is a better match for Hinako, since for Shiori Hinako is just food but Miko actually likes Hinako (i guess she likes her?)
Not a Shiori hater, but its not entirely clear how she will act next.

P.S. Shiori was like "those who want to die smell like rot"
For a moment thought maybe i smell like that too lol
