Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo

Upon graduating middle school, Rentarou Aijou manages to confess to the girl he loves. Unfortunately, he gets rejected, making it his 100th rejection in a row. Having experienced heartbreak after heartbreak, he goes to a matchmaking shrine and prays with the hope of finally getting a girlfriend in high school. Suddenly, the god of the shrine appears, promising Rentarou that he will meet one hundred soulmates in high school.

Although skeptical at first, Rentarou quickly acknowledges the truth behind the god's words when two of his soulmates—Hakari Hanazono and Karane Inda—confess to him the very same day that they meet him. However, there was one detail that the god forgot to tell Rentarou: if any of his soulmates fails to get into a relationship with him, they will die. Now trapped in a matter of life and death, Rentarou decides to date all of his soulmates.

With a heart so big that it can be shared among one hundred girlfriends, Rentarou makes the most out of his unanticipated high school life, with the Rentarou family growing ever larger!

Okay so this is very much ecchi so if you don't enjoy that you will not like. I, personally, am a pervert and enjoy it every so often. What separates 100 Girlfriends from other harem manga is, and get this: the protag is likeable. Genuinely, the main character is sincerely the sweetest, kindest, most loving boyfriend to his increasing number of absolutely ridiculous girlfriends. Additionally, every girlfriend comes with a trope (tsundere, teacher, loli, etc) and a COMPLETELY unrelated problem that is treated with love and care and respect regardless of how ridiculous it is. I've read hundreds of chapters, but the gimmick is stretched thin. 37 girlfriends is already too much. This show is progressive for a dumb harem show, and the fans keep saying how heart-warming it is. Genuinely well meaning as a polycule, which is a start and puts it above many abusive harem counterparts. In truth at it's core, it's still a forced and inorganic romance show, with heavy handed manga tropes, just presented with much gusto and creativity.

It's great that consent is shown as positive and important, that there is a wide variety of people and interests. Love and peace triumphs above all that is ... evil. This is real progress in the genre for accepting people for their faults and because of their differences. It's actually very restrictive and shallow about what the gal characters can be. This is literally a female cult around a superhuman teenage guy that can do anything for them. 100 Kanojo is mostly for young guys, starts as "satire" but plays it straight.

Reading this became a routine for me, got tired of this manga like 40 chapters ago. Just stuck it out to see if it'll get better, but my hope slowly died. Never seen anything like it, it's a bit awe inspiring. I typed this rant in one sitting, ben thinking a lot.

CONTENTS
Word of god says this guy gets with 100 gals, and it just happens. There is almost no development or friction, they're going for a huge scale with as many romantic tropes as possible. The supposed equality and agency here is incredibly unbalanced and impossible, Rentaro is a silly cult leader. Character development is only possible in short segments between dozens of others. At the start 100 Kanojo was engaging because the author actually had to write focused character arcs around just a few gals.

The usual problems with sexualizing every kind of woman is all there, with very little diversity but huge boobs and no ugly or fat people, no different body types. Sexual harassment of all kinds played as jokes, with much groping that is not always consensual. It's very 'safe' quirky, built off old manga tropes, but it's mostly from the male gaze. 100 Kanojo is surprisingly conservative about taking risks, almost no real problems around relationships and women.

Most characters are underaged, but this includes paedophilia with the youngest character at 12, and the age gap with Rentaro from adults that should have authority over him. Grandparents, teachers and principals are dating him too. The story works to justify these problems, and some girlfriends that seem mentally unwell, but still avoids real marginalized people as girlfriends. There is no sex at all because of problems around age and chastity, but contradicts this with lots of overt sexuality and sexual advances, even from the adults. This tension is uncomfortable.

I wonder if they'll ever go into LGBT topics too, or any different races or cultures? There are currently only 2 mixed race characters out of 37, with the only tan character being half Brazilian. There is some bisexuality(?) and gals getting with each other, but it's also from the male gaze. Despite the strong neurodivergent vibes from the quirks and hyperfixations, there are no real mentions for readers to relate to. Nothing has real weight.

It's fascinating to see, but it's clear the story's higher priorities are about fetishizing 'acceptable' kinds of gals. It's surprisingly conservative and restrictive despite the wacky hijinks, with small implications of representation. You're good so long as you're a cisgender Japanese woman in love with Rentaro, the superhuman teenager.

CONCLUSION
It's fine, but I'm disappointed as a long time reader. I don't think I'll need to read more at 37 girlfriends now. Now I know how shallow endless noise can be, it's stretched very thin and the gimmick is not new after the years. Just one good and earnest romantic story between two well developed characters would be plenty for me, I guess I learned that.

The problem is that's it's very shallow, tropey and overwhelming. Nothing can be taken seriously even though it has potential. Genuine problems of morality and power dynamics are all quickly glossed over and things inevitably work without friction. It's quite boring and strange for normies, if you aren't in the know about manga and anime tropes.

It seemed more ambitious than that, about the theme of love, but it's gotten monotonous and predictable. This is the only harem show that I liked, if only for a while. Hope that it pushes more real boundaries, not just not in the fetish or quirk department.

Why would someone date 100 people? If a class is 30 people, that's dating 3 and a quarter classes of the grade, if we assume all of them are girls. And since a year is 365 days, if he wants to devote a whole day to each girlfriend, then it would be 3.65 days each girlfriend, and he might not have time every day, so let's say 3 days each.
