The girl's love/yuri genre has recently seen a great boom when it comes to manga creations. Every day, it seems there is another one-shot or volume one or two of some other girl's love manga that repeats the same tropes over and over again. So, to find a manga that genuinely pleased me brought me great joy, as the girl's love genre gets flooded with the same stuff.

The story is one as old as time, with the shy, tomboyish, closed-off girl and the weak, fragile character that helps the other develop. Nagisa finds herself without many friends and especially without someone to love or ... care about, living with regrets and trauma that hold her back from developing any fragment of social life. Mashiro is a girl that caused the trauma as becomes clear early on. The lack of understanding, however, propels the story into one with depth and life. There aren't any cliche antagonists like the childhood best friend or the former lover. There are no signs of fetishization, just the desire for cute moments. At the same time, you can feel the intimacy from your screen as they hold each other dearly, and only wonder how the story will unfold.

This is a story within a story, and as the past events try to haunt a happier future, I cannot wait to see how this story concludes.

While it may not be up to everyone's tastes I think what makes this manga so incredible is that it is insanely straightforward and when it comes down to it the story is just your natural old romance with no stupid sub plots, no fanservice (kinda) and I find it don't drag anything out like for example characters getting into arguments which get resolved very maturely and quickly.

Or confessions which get handled really well and characters who initially start of weak or closed off who with time with the guidance of the ones they love develop massively into better people. Its honestly the most wholesome ... romance not just exclusive to the GL genre I've ever read or I suppose in some better sense its one of the most mature manga I've read.

For my own personal taste what I loved is that the first major half of the manga leading up to Nagi and Mashiro's confession was almost exclusively focused on them. I mean like the side characters quite literally got hardly any moments, the only real moments they do get serves to push Nagi and Mashiro in the correct direction. The second half I didn't like as much since the sudden jump away from the main couple to focusing on the 4 side characters kinda threw me off (Or 3 since the teacher don't get too many moments), I think it was written well and they're all unique in their own regard but me personally I would have preferred if the whole manga kept that focus on Nagi and Mashiro. Which I mean even in the second half they do get a lot of moments and chapters together but that's just my own selfish wants it don't take away from how amazing the series was at all.

My main takeaway of course is the development of the main characters Nagi and Mashiro, the other girls are great in their own regards too but particularly Nagi and Mashiro are the better written pair imo. Their development felt so natural and was just a treat to see how Nagi broke out of her shell and came to appreciate school for something outside of just the need to study and how Mashiro could face her weak constitution through Nagi and come to live a normal schoolgirl life. The deep-rooted issues they had within them just gradually went away as they spent more time together and learned more about eachother and love.

And their was over half the manga left to show them dating, of course thats when the side cast took more of the spotlight but Nagi and Mashiro had plenty of chapters to show their relationship plus their devotion to eachother was really special amongst all the couples in the show considering they'd from time to time say how they probably couldn't live without eachother.



Rambling aside my main praise is that its just a natural romantic story with no real silly dumb troupes or overextending any drama. Everything gets handled at a great pace and its just a really fluffy read. My only real complaint is that it wasn't longer but there's not much you can do about that.

A really good read if you want a break from any romance's with over the top or extremely dragged out confessions. Its just a wholesome and fluffy story of love and maturing as a person

Day 13/30 of the Yurithon:
Okay. Initially, I dropped this yuri at five chapters; I thought this manga was just not for me (a.k.a., "mid"). But I guess something compelled me to continue reading; I reckon it was being completely and utterly confused by how the relationship between the characters began (more on that later). Regardless, after reading fifteen more chapters and almost dropping it again, I can safely say that this is a very okay to decent yuri. I guess the main focus of the yuri is the main couple (no shit), so let's discuss that.

Initially, I did not buy the relationship between Nagisa and ... Mashiro whatsoever; I'd seen arranged marriages with more chemistry than these two. Nagisa's motivation to enter a relationship with Mashiro is based on Mashiro inadvertently causing Nagisa to miss her high-school entrance exam, resultantly wasting years of studying; Nagisa believes if she can like Mashiro, then she'd get over her failure to enter her desired school. This motivation just felt really artificial to me; I don't think friendship or romance should be an objective one must complete to resolve their own traumas (maybe there are some unresolved issues on my part). I probably would've preferred if she didn't have this bizarre motivation, and instead, harboured true animosity towards Mashiro, eventually growing to actually desire a relationship with her. I would've preferred if they revealed cracks in Nagisa's hate overtime, instead of making such a sudden shift in her mindset. They sorta' touch on this in chapter eighteen, but I felt like Nagisa's switch to want to like Mashiro was far too sudden (its literally in chapter one), and the animosity in her wasn't discussed enough to even be cited. Unfortunately, I never really got over that feeling of "artificiality", even if I began to enjoy and understand their relationship a bit more overtime. Eventually, I guess I saw a bit of the love blossoming; this manga's pretty wholesome, so that kind of helped. But honestly, I was much more invested in whatever was going on with Kuori. Her part of the story handles the complex concepts of love and relationships so truthfully that I was fully engaged in whatever scene she was in.

Spoiler warning:
More on the relationship between Nagisa and Mashiro: I feel like Mashiro's guilt should have lingered way more than a couple pages. I'm not saying that it's her fault for Nagisa missing the entrance exam, but surely she'd feel guilty enough for there to be a considerable rift between the two. On that note: why did they immediately reconcile and then enter a relationship after? This relationship was just progressing at a ridiculous rate, even if I liked the basic romantic beats; there just needed to be more time in between the beats.

Art good; I think I'm just gonna' mention if the art is really unique or particularly bad from now on, because I'm getting bored of saying the same thing over and over again (I'm sure all zero Yurithon readers would prefer that). The pacing was really iffy; I like faster-paced romance, but this shit was just moving too fast sometimes (like the aforementioned reconciliation and the officiation of the relationship in two chapters), and sometimes I felt like the author spent too much time with lulls. When I saw that Mashiro's "disability" (I guess that's what it is) was sorta' the crux of the relationship and their first meeting, I realised that "The Moon on a Rainy Night" handled it so much better, and with a hell of a lot more class. You know what: fuck it, just read "The Moon on a Rainy Night". I think I'll keep reading this manga for the Kuori stuff.
