Synopsis

Past life returner achieves something in its execution that I have always looked for when reading regression stories. It manages to actually use the knowledge of the future to turn the story into an exploration of how this could be used with particular aim towards the financial markets. I like this approach a lot and it is clear that a lot of care has been taken to make sure that the pacing doesn't screw up this exploration. That is perhaps what was the downfall of the original adaptation of the webnovel that was cancelled after 29. Granted, I have not actually read the novel, but ... there are certain quirks in the story that I can suspect are a result of a more carefully considered story than what is presented. For me this is especially clear in the tone.

The adaptation, in my opinion, fundamentally fails to convey many of its economic ideas and perspectives in a way that makes any sense beyond wishy washy financial politics. The confusing translation that I read certainly didn't help in this regard. But what it does manage to do is to nearly seamlessly transition from finance and action, and this I believe to be indicative of a core understanding of what it is that makes a story like this tick. It is a quality that perhaps betrays a calibre of writing that I suspect was lost in the translation from webnovel to webcomic. But luckily the core story elements remain and are quite enjoyable to read. I am a bit mixed on the approach towards morality this story takes. There is a pretty impressive neutral tone in the portrayal of the financial domination (and crimes) commited. Even if they should be presented as good, since they benefit our main character, tonally it doesn't come off that way. It also doesn't pretend that the position reached by the main cast is one of pure hardwork. At the same time I do struggle with the main character. I believe him to be a bit inconsistent. Perhaps as a result of how the comic chooses to pace certain arcs, but I think there are some quite fast behavioral shifts that make sense in context, but aren't given the weight they should be given.

While I really enjoy the building of an empire element that is a main focus early on, I do worry that perhaps the series has lost the some of the qualities that made it unique. As is often the case with stories like this, once a certain situation is reached and surpassed it is hard to keep the same charm. It no longer is about an above average guy using his past knowledge to resolve issues. It is suddenly a person that has everything and is at a godlike level of intellect using his position to fight something unreachable. It is a direct consequence of poor consideration and power scaling in my opinion and I don't think it was at all necessary in the context of this story. A mixture of finance and gates over finance as power could have perhaps kept it fresh for longer.

All in all I would suggest reading this if you enjoy gate action stories already and are looking for something that has an interesting flavor. But sadly, do to general quality issues with the adaptation (I think), as well as issues with the pacing and characterization I am unable to give it the glowing recommendation that I would have liked to give. Nevertheless, I am generally still more positive than negative on it, and think it is certainly above average in the genre.

i just dropped this series at the end of S1. S1 covers the financial arc this alone was very entertaining and made was an immaculate setup for the seasons to come, ended on the perfect cliffhanger to get into the next arc.

but as soon as i started the next chapter/season i realized something was amiss, the art went from a 8.4/10 to a 5.3/10. its art style for me was a gripping point, was unique enough to separate it from its most other manhwa but the beginning of S2 they changed artist and now its just so generic. keep in mind the art is ...

This was one of the most disappointing manhwa I've ever read.
It baits you with some fake complexity, lot of economic blahblah which makes half sense from the pov of the MC and what he wants to achieve by dominating the world's economy to ensure that the financial system doesn't collapse when the monsters invasion starts, but it's INCREDIBLY poorly executed, taking almost entirely the first season (60+ chapters!!!!) and turning a gates regression story into a mega boring "chabeol's youngest son" kind of crap.
Then the invasion starts and it's all CONSTANTLY rage bait where the writer keeps methodically and completely destroying ALL what he had ...
