How far could you go, without turning to look back?
This anime is one of a kind. Honey and Clover is for people that don’t have everything figured out. The way it handles emotions and human relationships is remarkable. You could genuinely feel every emotion portrayed, and every conflict felt real.
The dialogue is exceptionally good paired with the music. Those end parts that have such a melancholic feel to them are just excellent. The op is great, the soundtracks are too.
Most of the characters are very well written, allowing the viewer to feel and empathize even with the ones we see less.
The biggest issue this anime
...
has is pretty obvious from the first episode: Hagu. The fact that she looks like a child is a problem by itself, but it could be lessened or even overlooked if she didn’t also act like one. If we were told that Hagu was 7, the only thing that would change in this story would be that Takemoto would be in jail. Seriously, she absolutely acts like a kid. Maybe it would help if she didn’t have collectively, in all 24 episodes, less lines than any other character has in one episode. At this point other than growth stunt, they should have given her also a speech impediment just to complete the look, maybe also change her age to 3000 years old.
Genuinely, what were they thinking? This is rather disappointing, more so because this isn’t a gooner isekai anime, but it’s a josei, a very good one at that.
However, every other aspect is just so good that the only flaw almost cancels out. Definitely worth a watch.
The perfect word to describe Honey and Clover that often came to mind while watching, is: bittersweet. The whole show is comparable to that bittersweet feeling you get on a long car drive, watching the scenery pass by through the window.

If you’re looking for something quick or don’t have the will to sit through episodes waiting for it to get good, this anime isn’t for you.
However, if you’re willing to give it a chance, it will reward you.
The first 6 episodes are boring, to say the least. At that point you don’t care about the characters, the pacing is slow, it’s hard to tell if the story is going anywhere and you wonder if it’s going to be another episodic anime.
As someone who isn’t particularly into sci-fi, workplace drama or slice of life, I was debating dropping it and wondering why I stared it. Could
...
an anime that got so much praise really be just… this?
I pushed through, and I vividly remember liking episode 7, which was the first time I wasn’t indifferent to this anime. The way it goes forward from there is well executed, most of it keeps you glued to the screen, especially the last 10 episodes.
It gets political and it's great on that aspect, however, we never get a resolution for the issues that are brought up other than Claire translating books in 10 years.
I liked the ending but I wish they would have done something more with Tanabe and also Hachimaki. I mean, her character doesn’t waver once, I wish we could’ve got some type of conflict with her being hurt by how Hachi completely disregarded her, which I thought they would when, on the moon with Claire, she comes to the conclusion that Hachi isn’t in love with her. Whether that was true or not, it never gets mentioned again and it’s just another possibly interesting development for their relationship that never went anywhere.
Either way, I think the cast is great. Every character has something to offer and they work very well together.
Also, I think they should’ve killed Hakim off rather than whatever they tried to do with him and Nono at the end. About that, Hachi did pull the trigger, even if there was no bullet. I’d expect that to have a toll on his mental health like Hakim warned, but I guess not.
Overall, I think it's a very valid show.

Going into this anime with absolutely no idea what it was about was truly an experience. I didn’t know it’s an adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas until I finished it and searched reviews/analysis online. I’ll definitely be reading it as soon as I can.
About the anime, I’ll be looking at it as something that stands on its own, also because from what I read, it differs from the book in ending and setting.
Firstly, I loved the art. If you, like me, enjoy anything visually interesting, this is definitely for you. I think it does a great job at immersing

the viewer. The extravagance of it all for me was the cherry on top to this french aristocrat world. Also, the recaps in french at the start were just so good.
The story is absolutely captivating, and I was intrigued from the very start. I watched the whole show in 3 days, the first 12 episodes in 2 days and the last 12 episodes all at once. I can’t recall a moment where I was bored.
Albert, Franz, the Count… these are some good, well developed characters. Even the side cast is interesting, with each their own conflicts. The voice acting cast does an amazing job for each character.
One of my favourite things about Gankutsuou is for sure the music. During the anime, so many moments are accompanied by such amazing soundtracks that it deserves special praise. I absolutely loved the op, I didn’t skip it even once, even when I was dying to see what happened next.
This anime is one of those hidden gems you find once in a blue moon.
