I saw this at an obscure film archive exhibition around 2017. The artist who made the installation wasn't around, so I couldn't ask them what the films on display were called. It was part of a loop which included several other films. The titles weren't mentioned anywhere. The staff also was not able to tell me what any of it was called. After years and years of digging I stumbled upon this obscene website that holds a few stills of this movie. I was blown away when I found out this is actually from 1917. Maybe the fact that it was exactly 100 years old ... at the time explains why I saw it at that exhibition back then.

I remember cracking up when the grandpa kicked the guy behind him which made him fly away like some sort of beyblade. Shit was ahead of its time. I cannot believe this made me laugh harder than any other animation ever did (besides Plastic Neesan, maybe).

I think Baki gets overlooked because most people don’t really know how to approach it... It's pretty extreme and often makes no sense. And while that’s true, that’s also kind of the point.

Everything is exaggerated to the point of absurdity. Human anatomy, dialogue, expressions. The fights are ridiculous and the character designs look illegal. The dialogue constantly escalates like it’s daring itself to go further, with that being its sole purpose. Sometimes things get so ridiculously aggressive that it's just funny. There’s a certain fight involving 99999999 punches that ends with a single decisive hit. That for me is the embodiment of this series. ... Best fight in the anime imo, made me LMAO harder than I probably should have

There aren't many anime I watch just "for the fights" but with Baki that's different. Every fight escalates until it borders on parody. It’s overly dramatic, hyper violent, and very theatrical. The way techniques and fights get vizualized is so insane it circles back to being funny.

Baki is unpredictable in a way that feels rare. It’s pure spectacle, very brutal, and surprisingly funny because of this. Clearly created by someone with a rich imagination and way too much testosterone.

Give it a shot. Worst case, you’re confused the whole time. Best case, you’re confused and having a blast. 10/10 display of human anatomy and sheer strength.
