Synopsis

A squid-like creature, known as a Happian, leaves his home planet with the desire to spread happiness across the universe. He lands on Earth, but quickly finds himself in danger of captivity by its inhabitants. Fortunately, he is found by an unsmiling little girl named Shizuka Kuze, who feeds him and names him Takopii. Feeling indebted, Takopii decides to do everything in his power to bring a smile to her face.

The task is easier said than done, however. Shizuka is bullied by her classmates, she does not have a father, and her mother is never home—though the gravity of these issues flies over the naive Takopii's head. Even so, Shizuka does have one source of happiness: her dog Chappy. The connection Shizuka and Chappy share only increases Takopii's desire to make the girl smile.

While Takopii's attempts to lift Shizuka's spirits lead to unintended consequences, he is determined to take things into his own tentacles, test his understanding of human beings, and achieve his goal of spreading happiness.

I bawled my eyes out watching this, and I genuinely enjoyed it a lot. However, when you think about it more carefully, the show has serious writing issues. The way the story ends does not really make sense, and it fails to resolve or offer any meaningful solution to the serious issues it presents. It often comes across as trying to be pretentious rather than telling a grounded story.

You could argue that the story is fantastical in nature and that my expectations were misplaced, and you would be right. Still, when a story attempts to tackle such serious themes, it is natural to expect grounded ...

Mixed Feelings
Bleak, Harrowing, and little confused.

The big questions here are:
1. Is it exploitative of the subject matter/misery porn? Possibly.
2. Is it able to provide a reasonable resolution? No.

It does an ok job of touching on a lot of common problems, and injects some humour.
There's some worthy observations on human psychology and how they act.
However, the switch is clumsy and you're meant to sympathise with an abusive child - things may explain her actions but it doesn't excuse them, and never will.

It builds up for a message that is not true at all. If a work ends with a message that is shown working, someone is inclined to believe that the message is worth their time. But with this anime, the thing that would solve conflits is tried at the half of the story and just don't work at all. The message of the first episode, of "rules are made for a reason", or however you may interpret it, is much more impactul and valuable than the message of the last episode. This anime had a lot of scenes to feel, but since the ending is ...
