Yuusha no Kuzu

By the mid-21st century, Tokyo's criminal underworld is ruled by Demon Lords—crime bosses who have undergone ether enhancement surgery, granting them terrifying superpowers. The only ones who can take them down are Heroes, bounty hunters who boost their own ether powers using the drug E3 (E-Three). With legalized killing as part of the job, being a Hero is less about justice and more about survival.

Yashiro, known as the Reaper, is one such Hero—an independent enforcer who works alone. That is, until Jougamine, a high school girl and self-proclaimed "apprentice," forces her way into his life. Reluctantly taking her under his wing, Yashiro soon finds himself caught in a whirlwind of deadly conflicts.

Many people are watching the anime Sentenced to Be a Hero, which was written by Rocket Shoukai. He also has another of his series, Scum of the Brave, having a hit anime. This one has the classic clash of heroes vs. demon lord, but in a modern setting focused on the criminal underworld. Quite simply, each of these heroes has their own superpower, but each seems to have their pros and setbacks. It will be interesting to see how each different power varies and what their dangers are.

Unlike Sentenced to Be a Hero, this one is more lighthearted. As one of the strengths is ... the banter between Yashiro and his 3 new disciples. The banter in this is pretty fun so far. Plus, it will be curious how the 3 girls influence Yashiro and vice versa.

Production values are pretty average. It's mostly serviceable, but it gets the job done. With this anime scheduled to air for 24 episodes, it makes for a decent watch.

Do you not love a different take on a mainstream genre.
Perhaps you are bored with the average medieval fantasy setting and want a change.
This anime offers that change, because instead of heroes fighting demons with magic in a fairytale land, it is about a group of heroes fighting demonic mobs with superpowers in an urban jungle and slum.

The premise sounds interesting and new, but sadly that is mostly what it has to offer in terms of originality.
Overall it is not a bad or boring anime from a general perspective, but it borrows many elements from other mainstream shows, and you will notice those elements if ... you have watched a lot of anime with similar tropes.
Some moments even feel like a simple reskin of elements from other series.

A little heads up, the anime was originally written by Rocket Shoukai, the same writer of Sentenced to be a Hero, so if you watch both at the same time you will notice shared elements.
Some of the common traits are

the hero who is not viewed as classically honorable

a generally rough but kind hearted main character

and a super cute heroine with a bubbly personality.

If Sentenced to be a Hero is too gory or extreme for you, but you still want a similar flavor, you can try this anime.
It is not completely violence free, and it has some intense scenes, but the tone is aimed more at a younger audience, with lots of comedy and a lighter touch.

Animation wise, it is nothing special, but the art style is distinct enough to feel like more effort went into it compared to some cookie cutter hero party shows.
The OST is also different from stock fantasy music, and it grows on you after a few listens, though I would call it decent rather than outstanding.

Overall it is an enjoyable anime and one of my favorites this season, but I would not recommend it to viewers who have seen a lot of anime and want something truly new, because it can feel repetitive.
That said, it is a great entry level show for people who are new to anime, and it is an easy watch to hook a friend without starting them on something intense.

Yuusha no Kuzu is a simple anime, but not in a good way. Its simplicity feels shallow and cheap rather than clean or effective. I could barely make it through five episodes, and even that felt forced.

Almost every aspect of the series suffers from the same problem: simple characters, simple dialogue, simple animation, simple fights, simple voice acting, simple visuals, simple effects, and an equally simple story. This is not deliberate minimalism; it comes across as a lack of effort, detail, and depth.

The problems do not stop there. The series has serious continuity and spatial logic issues. For example, during a chase scene, the characters ... turn left into a corridor, the chase abruptly ends, and a fight begins in the room they enter. Moments later, a reason triggers a ceiling collapse, and it is suddenly implied that this room is directly beneath the one they started in, meaning the characters somehow descended an entire floor without any visual indication. This is impossible both visually and spatially, and it completely breaks immersion.

There are also frequent situations where characters openly acknowledge that they are in an advantageous position, only to never use that advantage and instead put themselves into a worse situation for no clear reason. Rather than creating tension, these moments feel like the story deliberately ignoring its own setup to compensate for weak writing.

Another element that actively undermines the experience is the repeated use of chibi cut-ins. While the story is progressing, a chibi version of a character suddenly appears to explain things directly to the audience. This disrupts the tone, destroys what little atmosphere exists, and reinforces the feeling that the show prefers blunt exposition over proper storytelling.

It has been a long time since an anime was bad enough to make me drop it out of sheer frustration. It leaves no lasting impression and is instead remembered for its poor logic and storytelling decisions that undermine the entire viewing experience.
